THE OPPORTUNITY

Job Title: Vice President, Business Development

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

Direct Reports: 2

Location: Calgary, Alberta

 

MANDATE

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Vice President, Business Development will partner with the Senior Leadership Team to identify, pursue, and execute on opportunities that will build out and augment the organization’s vision of growth across Canada. This role requires a highly driven business development executive with extensive skills in strategy, customer relationships, opportunity management, and revenue growth.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team the role plays an integral part, working closely with operations, finance, health and safety, and functional leaders. The successful candidate is a seasoned professional and an effective business leader with a high sense of urgency and natural ability to garner top performance from others and deliver winning practices.  The role has oversight of all market facing activities, including marketing, brand strategies, market research, and internal and external business development communications.

 

Key Accountabilities

The position will include the following responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Provide business development and marketing leadership, guidance, and mentorship to the organization and your direct reports who include the Oil & Gas Sector Lead and the Community Infrastructure Sector Lead
  • Be recognized within the organization as a key business leader responsible for providing innovative solutions and presenting business opportunities to increase revenue
  • Take responsibility for the safety performance of the business development team by promoting and maintaining a safe working environment, following all company protocols for safety
  • Through visible leadership create a strong health and safety culture for employees and clients
  • Attract, retain and develop business development professionals to support best-in-class processes
  • Lead a team that understands the strategy of the business and demonstrates Matrix’s values

Build Organizational Capability

  • In partnership with the Human Resources team, champion and drive skill development activities to grow business development competency
  • Develop business development capability across Sector Lead’s and the team through coaching and regular one on one meetings
  • Develop and implement marketing and sales capabilities as needed to meet our revenue growth goals

Develop & Execute Business Development Strategy

  • Develop, lead, and execute Matrix’s business development strategy
  • Lead and support your direct reports in the creation of market sector specific business development plans that align with the growth strategy
  • Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team and stakeholders on strategic projects that drive growth
  • Identify, pursue and partner with the VP Operations and Sector Leads to develop relationships with new and existing key accounts
  • Present strategic business opportunities to the Senior Leadership Team
  • Represent Matrix at relevant industry functions, partnering with our staff to prepare and present as required
  • Participate in major contract negotiations for key accounts
  • Provide direction to Sector Leads conducting relevant market research; coordinate and oversee this activity and monitor trends
  • Conduct reviews and support the development of major bids and proposals to ensure success through opportunity, risk, and financial analysis
  • Develop a consistent approach to customer relationship management across the business

Drive Results

  • Lead a business development team to achieve targeted growth goals
  • Provide executive leadership in the development of key accounts and marketing activities for all sectors
  • Fully utilize and further develop a network of relevant senior contacts to foster future commercial opportunities and maintain existing relationships
  • Set annual individual business development goals in alignment with business strategy. Track progress to ensure performance success

Marketing

  • Assist in communicating the business development strategy to internal staff and external stakeholders
  • Working with Senior Leadership Team and others, identify challenges and emerging issues to recognize internal and external marketing opportunities and solutions
  • Develop short and long-term plans and budgets for marketing and communications

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Meet established revenue targets and increase market visibility for Matrix and their service offerings
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the organization and their work to better understand the needs of internal and external stakeholders
  • Build trust and credibility within the Senior Leadership Team
  • Provide inspiration and establish a collaborative team environment which encourages continuous improvement and a level of excellence
  • Support recruitment efforts for current vacancies and future growth

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or equivalent education and experience

Experience

  • 15+ years of relevant business development experience in the environmental services industry, preferably in BC, ON and AB.
  • Experience working with a Senior Leadership Team in developing strategy, influencing business process and change management
  • Proven ability to functionally lead, as well as develop and implement strategic business development initiatives across industries and geographies
  • Demonstrated personal track record of meeting business objectives and sales targets
  • Experience in a complex multi-business line organization would be considered an asset
