The company has grown organically both domestically and internationally as a result of innovation and new product development. However, it’s impressive track record of exponential growth has been driven by strategic acquisitions successfully integrated in numerous international markets. Global revenues are approximately $14 billion and the total workforce now numbers some 15,000 employees on four continents.

The tax function is vital to Saputo‘s continued financial success and growth strategy. The global Tax Group interacts and collaborates closely with virtually every geographic operating division as well as all corporate functions ranging from Human Resources, to Legal, Sales, Manufacturing and M & A.  The Tax function oversees all global activities related to ongoing compliance, tax planning and the development of tax strategies related to M&A activities.

The recently announced retirement of the present incumbent in this role has resulted in the decision to conduct a thorough search of the external market to identify potential candidates for this key corporate function.

The Tax Group’s growth mirrors that of the corporation over the last 15 years. While Saputo‘s revenues have increased more than threefold during this period, the tax group has grown from 5 to 20 professionals with teams located in Canada, the US, Australia and the UK. Notwithstanding this impressive growth rate, the tax group has been very stable, highly engaged and has continually provided value added advice and service to senior management as well as ongoing monitoring of all of the company’s activities where there are tax implications.

The Senior Vice President, Taxation will report to the Chief Financial Officer and manage a geographically dispersed group of some 20 professionals. This role has ultimate responsibility for providing stewardship, advice and recommendations for the executive team on all tax related matters.

Following are several key priorities for this position:

  • Provide guidance in all matters of transfer pricing within a significantly complex geographic market characterized by increased cross-border exporting activities.
  • Monitor the constant and ongoing activities of government audits and assessments in all geographic markets where Saputo operates.
  • Provide strategic guidance and advice to senior management in all areas of tax and in sure that the company remains current of ever-changing tax legislation, government subsidies and tax provisions in all geographic regions where the company has activities.
  • The Senior Vice President, Taxation must provide the leadership and guidance to the 20 person tax group. This will include the coaching and mentoring required to further develop the team as well as the rigor to monitor and measure team performance and to continue to promote a culture of providing sound advice and added value service across the entire company.

The ideal candidate for this position will be fluently bilingual and possess an appropriate educational background (CPA, CFA, M. Taxation).  This is a senior role at Saputo which requires at least 20 years of relevant experience within large complex organizations operating internationally. Alternatively, candidates may have gained their experience within the context of tier 1 professional services firms, with a significant track record of having serviced large clients operating globally.

In addition to the aforementioned technical competencies in international tax and a career progression that has ultimately led to a current role in senior management, the ideal candidate must demonstrate the following attributes:

  • Saputo is a significantly complex company with a highly operational culture. The ideal candidate must possess the rigour and discipline to manage multiple projects within this transactional business model. This requires that candidates possess the right blend of strategic perspective as well as a hands-on approach to managing the more tactical aspects of the tax function.
  • Candidate must demonstrate the credibility and professional acumen required for providing advice and influence decision-making at the senior levels of management. However, they must also show versatility and be highly adaptable from an interpersonal and communications perspective, as they will be working with all divisions in different geographies as well as all corporate functions across the organization. The ideal candidate must be capable of breaking down and vulgarizing complex tax issues and tax implications for line operating executives.
