The Organization

During the mid-1960s, a group of reverends across four different faiths collaborated to discuss an array of social issues. A notable concern they shared was the well-being of individuals who were living in poverty in Edmonton’s inner city. Together, this group formed a non-faith based organization known as the Edmonton City Centre Church Corporation. Incorporated in 1970, the Edmonton City Centre Church Corporation’s mission was to make a positive, meaningful difference in the lives of people experiencing poverty.

Today, this group has evolved into e4c – a large non-profit organization that operates more than 20 distinct programs to meet the changing needs of the community. Today, e4c employs over 400 staff and touches the lives of over 19,100 Edmontonians each year. e4c continues to be guided by their compassion for the vulnerable. With the mission of supporting individuals in times of need, creating opportunities to be self-sufficient, respond to changing needs, and prioritization of service excellence, their ultimate goal is eliminating poverty in the Edmonton community.

The Opportunity

Mandate

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Senior Director, School and Community-Based Programming oversees and manages larger, complex programs that e4c facilitates in schools and in the community. Serving as part of the Executive Leadership team, the Senior Director, School and Community-Based Programming will strategically lead programs that serve 14,000 individuals in Edmonton, including but not limited to Early Learning, School Nutrition, Financial Empowerment programs, and Financial Management HUB.  Moreover, the Senior Director, Community and School-Based Program has accountability of a $10 Million operating budget. This role will have the opportunity to collaborate with community partners to provide meaningful resources to vulnerable populations, therefore carrying out e4c’s mission.

 

Key Accountabilities

The position will include the following responsibilities:

Program Delivery

  • Oversee the overall model/framework for school-based and community programs;
  • Develop and implement program policies and procedures;
  • Define ideal outcomes and objectives of programs and deliver successfully on them;
  • Monitor the operational efficiency of programs, and ensure the programs are delivered according to best practices;
  • Ensure the programs adhere to e4c’s mission, values, and vision;
  • Take community and client feedback into account, and advocate for their needs; and
  • Lead, coach and develop a team of managers to positively impact persons’ served lives and their communities through the delivery of high quality programs and services.

Leadership and Team Management

  • Working as part of Executive Leadership Team, play a key role in the overall development, strategic planning, service delivery, and management of the agency across multiple sites;
  • Directly supervise and develop program managers by instilling the necessary skills in them to mentor, encourage, and motivate their team;
  • Play a role in the recruitment, onboarding and training of employees;
  • Assist in finding solutions for program and team performance challenges, and coach managers to employ strategies to improve these challenges;
  • Allocate appropriate resources towards agency goals and distribute workload across teams. Provide constructive feedback to continuously improve supervision skills and program delivery;
  • Create and support a high performing culture aligned with e4c core values. Cultivate a work environment that emphasizes team-oriented attitudes through the communication of the organization’s vision, professional development opportunities, and mentoring;
  • Establish and track yearly program, departmental and team goals;
  • Collaborate as part of the Executive Leadership team to execute e4c’s strategic plan, and to implement e4c’s strategic plan, as well as establish new strategic initiatives that mirror e4c’s vision;
  • Assist in finding solutions for program and team performance challenges, and coach managers to employ strategies to improve these challenges;
  • Directly supervise and develop program managers by instilling the necessary skills in them to mentor, encourage, and motivate their team; and
  • Work with managers to manage operational changes and their impact within the team.

Management of Business Practices

  • Develop annual budgets and operational plans; and monitor adherence to the budget and plans on a regular basis;
  • Allocate the necessary financial resources to support areas in need;
  • Evaluate the quality of service delivery in programs, and identify areas where business practices can be improved;
  • Assess and develop infrastructure, frameworks and key processes that will ensure that best practices, scope of responsibility and quality programming.
  • Audit levels of operational efficiency across programs;
  • Ensure programs and staff comply with regulatory, contractual, and accreditation requirements; and
  • Anticipate risks that could affect the Early Learning, School Based Programs, Financial Management HUB and Financial Empowerment programs, and develop plans to mitigate such issues.

Advocacy

  • Timely and accurate reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and other stakeholders according to outlined agreements and regulations;
  • Facilitate internal communication between Program Managers;
  • Stay informed of issues in the community that could have effects on the organization, programs, and clients;
  • Advocate for issues and interests on behalf of the Early Learning, School Based Programs, Financial Management HUB and Financial Empowerment programs; and
  • Act in the best interests of clients and stakeholders, and take actions to positively impact these groups.

 

First Year Deliverables / Measures of Success

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Learn the ins and outs of e4c, its service offerings, and standard practices and procedures for successfully delivering programs to those in need;
  • Implement innovative projects and initiatives that align with e4c’s strategic plan and goals;
  • Engage and build partnerships with other public sector organizations to increase available resources for clients; and
  • Build and lead a high-performing and accountable team that delivers successful results in accordance with e4c’s values.

 

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services, psychology, administration, education, or another related field.
  • A Master’s degree in human services, teaching, community development, or another related field is an asset.

Experience:

  • Previous not-for-profit experience or a background in human services is an asset.
  • Strong track record of success in working in educational or school-based environments.
  • 8+ years of senior-level leadership experience
  • Demonstrated success in strategic thinking & planning, leading teams, management of several ongoing programs, quality improvement, and change management.
  • Proven competency in the administration and oversight of large budgets.
  • Prior experience in working with multi-stakeholder groups, including clients, levels of government, contract funders, and other sector leaders.
  • Prior experience or strong understanding of working in a board governance environment is considered an asset.
