Principal | Lane Caputo Compensation Inc.

The Organization

Lane Caputo Compensation Inc. is an independent board advisory firm specializing in guiding boards and leadership teams in linking their organization’s performance – from strategy to execution – to executive compensation programs. Their focus includes executive and Board of Directors compensation reviews; strategic short and long-term incentive design; executive retention and succession planning; compensation planning and integration in merger and acquisition situations; and the linkage of ESG initiatives to compensation programs. They have been servicing the Western Canadian marketplace for over fifteen years through their offices in Vancouver and Calgary.

Mandate

The Calgary office of six professionals is seeking an ambitious Principal level consultant capable of working on challenging assignments related to executive and director compensation.   This newly created role reports to the Partners with the primary responsibility of providing expert oversight of technical and analytical activities and to assist senior consulting staff with client-focused deliverables in a growing Executive Compensation practice.

The role works closely with Partners, Sr. Consultants and the Analyst Team to help bridge the gap between the generation of analytical results and the sculpting of consulting advice. Initially the development of new business will not be an expectation of the role, however it is expected that candidates will want to build strong relationships with new and existing clients, and be part of both the sale and consulting process. This role will have the opportunity to oversee some projects from beginning to end, while on others act as a project manager, keeping the Analyst Team on task and helping the Senior Consultants and Partners draft client ready materials such as reports and presentations.

The successful candidate will interact with the most senior leaders in client organizations (Board Members, CEO and CFO) and be exposed to a broad range of clients and industries and will develop first-hand knowledge of critical business issues while honing client-management and problem-solving skills. The ideal candidate will be able to manage the detailed technical work required, lead the firm’s research initiatives and have the desire and potential to develop into a full consulting role. Professional development and client exposure will be provided to facilitate both technical skill development and the skills required to lead client engagements.

Key Accountabilities

Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing both detailed and high-level peer review of statistical and computational analysis of proxy circular and other publicly available compensation data sources, including financial statement analysis and other sources of data as applicable, produced by the Analyst Team;
  • Appropriately benchmarking clients’ compensation arrangements to their respective markets, considering their business strategy, industry, stage of development, size and complexity; this includes salary, incentive plan value and short- and long-term incentive plan design and practice;
  • Preparing initial drafts of client reports and presentations, and assisting with the delivery of these as you develop your skills and expertise;
  • Using innovative methods to lead and co-author market research initiatives and intellectual capital development on compensation practices, including, for example, the impacts of financial, operational and ESG performance, in both absolute terms and relative to peer groups or stock exchange indices; and
  • Mentoring and providing technical and project guidance to the Analyst Team.

First Year Deliverables / Measures of Success

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s abilities in the following areas:

  • Managing client engagements and projects independently;
  • Displaying an attitude and aptitude for curiosity, a drive for client service and satisfaction and comfort in a research based, data driven role; and,
  • Expressing a desire to become the lead for one of the service offerings and making it your own such as ESG, Compensation Risk Assessment, LTIP Renewal etc.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education:

  • Ability to learn – Bachelor’s Degree, Finance, Accounting, Economics or other related fields;

Experience:

  • Transferable skills and experience – 5-10 years of professional experience interacting with clients in a client focused environment with experience in compensation and/or analyzing financial statements and other regulatory filings;

Competencies and Attributes:

  • Technical acumen – strong working knowledge of statistical methods and data analysis, with the associated ability to present findings in a clear and concise manner;
  • Excel skills – Excel will be your “second home” as will Word and PowerPoint (familiarity and proficiency with financial software such as Capital IQ, Bloomberg, etc. would be an asset);
  • Creativity – ability to identify problems and draw conclusions, themes, and trends based on detailed data analysis;
  • Curiosity – not afraid to ask questions and seek clarification and supporting our continuous learning environment; and
  • Enthusiasm to join the Lane Caputo Team – comfortable working in a fast-paced boutique consulting environment and a strong desire to improve your ability to research & analyze, write & present and instruct & learn.
