THE ORGANIZATION

Founded in 1999, Edge School was created to facilitate the holistic development of Academics, Athletics, and Character in a way that does not sacrifice one for the other.  Student-athletes are engaged in their learning in an environment where they feel safe to push themselves to new levels of personal excellence, supervised by staff that are genuinely interested in their wellbeing. They graduate young people who can launch out and make a real difference in their world.

The School’s leaders, teachers and coaches are united in their vision for students. Faculty, staff and coaches all work from the same plan and model the behaviour to incorporate character development in the student’s day whether during school meetings, athletic programming, DPC activities, academic programming, cafeteria conduct, hallways and more.

The Edge School (Calgary) is located in a 170,000 sq. ft. school and sports complex facility for students-athletes in Grades 4-12.   Approximately 300 students are enrolled in Basketball, Hockey, Dance, Golf, Soccer, Figure Skating, Multi-Sport or the Flex Academy and the average class size is about 15.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Job Title:Principal

Reports to:Head of School/CEO

Direct Reports:Teaching Staff (approx. 17)

Indirect Reports:Other faculty

THE MANDATE

As a member of the Edge Senior Leadership Team, the Principal is responsible for the day-to-day organization and operation of the school. This is a leadership role, responsible for the effective delivery of instruction, academic leadership, ensuring best practices for student learning and faculty performance, and ensuring that the mission, vision and values of Edge are reflected in the operating philosophy and school culture. The Principal is a change maker and an inspirational leader who will fuel the building a learning organization.  The Principal will strive for excellence when it comes to developing the best Student, Athlete and Person.

The Principal will be committed to fulfilling the leadership dimensions contained in the Leadership Quality Standards guidelines developed by Alberta Education.  The Nine Leadership dimensions are:

Key Accountabilities

  • Collaborate with the Headmaster, Board, Educational Leadership Team, teachers and staff in setting and implementing the Strategic Plan
  • Create an optimal learning environment that achieves the school’s mission to “Build a Culture of Personal Excellence in Academics, Athletics and Character”
  • Ensure a safe and positive environment for students and staff
  • Inspire and celebrate educational excellence and achievement
  • Articulate and communicate the school’s mission and vision to the internal and external communities
  • Engage with key external stakeholders, including parents and Government
  • Foster a culture of innovation, exploration, and excellence
  • Ensure compliance with the Education Act
  • Uphold and model the highest values of integrity and respect

 

FIRST YEAR DELIVERABLES / MEASURES OF SUCCESS

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Continue execution of the 2019-2022 Strategic Plan
  • Built trust and strong working relationships with the leadership team
  • Encourage professional development and build leadership capacity within the school
  • Evidence within the school that development is occurring
  • Engage with parents and students illustrating a positive customer experience and service approach

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree, ideally in educational leadership (asset);
  • Alberta Principal Leadership designation

Experience

  • Leading in an outcomes-based assessment environment
  • Minimum 5 years in a leadership capacity, ideally at the Principal level
