THE ORGANIZATION

The Edmonton Eskimo Football Club is a community owned football team playing in the Canadian Football League (“CFL”) that was formed in 1949 and adopted their now famous Green and Gold uniforms from the University of Alberta.  The Eskimos have won 14 Grey Cup Championships since 1949 including three in a row in the 50’s and five in a row in the 70’s & 80’s.  The Eskimo football club plays a very active role in the Edmonton and Northern Alberta communities and participates in many events under their Champions in the Community brand.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Job Title: President & Chief Executive Officer

Reports to: Board of Directors

Location: Edmonton, Alberta

 

THE MANDATE

The President and Chief Executive Officer (“President and CEO”) will have overall responsibility for executive management and strategic leadership of the Edmonton Eskimos.  The President and CEO reports directly to a Board of Directors who are influential business and community leaders.  The President and CEO will operate within a framework set by the Board and function as the principal representative of the Edmonton Eskimos to business, industry, the community and various levels of government.  This role will be responsible for providing outstanding leadership in achieving the short and long-term goals of the Edmonton Eskimos, as well as, providing effective management of its human, physical and financial resources.

Key Accountabilities

The position will include the following responsibilities:

  • Development of Strategies and Objectives, including Long-range and annual Business and Strategic Planning: Responsible to develop and recommend to the Board for approval, policies, strategies and objectives designed to achieve the Corporate Vision and strategic initiatives.
  • Football Operations: Ensure the football operations have the resources, structure and focus to field a team which is competitive and has the opportunity to compete for the Grey Cup every year.
  • Due Diligence and Report to the Board on Performance and Board Policies: Responsible to report to the Board on performance of the business and strategic plans and compliance with Board policies.
  • Enhance and Promote the Edmonton Eskimos Public Image: The President and CEO is the official spokesperson for the organization and is required to develop and establish proactive positive interaction with the media. Responsible to promote the Edmonton Eskimos and its services locally, nationally and internationally, with all stakeholders, employees, industry organizations, media, and governments.  To work effectively with key stakeholders and industry partners in promoting the objectives of the Edmonton Eskimos and to be visible as a leader and contributor to the betterment of our communities and region.
  • Stakeholder Relationships: Work cooperatively and productively with all stakeholders; build and manage relationships with key stakeholders including: the City of Edmonton, Edmonton Tourism, The Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Business Association, and federal and provincial governments.
  • Fiscal Accountability: Responsible to produce high quality results while working within the financial constraints of the organization; to ensure the long term financial health and accountability of the corporation and take responsibility for maintaining fiscal sustainability.
  • Operational Excellence: Achieve organizational objectives and key performance targets as laid out in the long-range and annual business and strategic plans.
  • Team Building: Responsible for the ongoing review of the organizational structure to create additional efficiencies in operations and responsible to motivate and lead a team of managers that are committed to the business objectives. To be equally committed to employee morale and maintaining a culture that supports the organization’s strategic objectives.
  • Canadian Football League (CFL): The CFL consists of nine Member Clubs – Edmonton Eskimos, Calgary Stampeders, BC Lions, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Ottawa RedBlacks, Hamilton Tigercats, Toronto Argonauts, and Montréal Alouettes. The CFL is directed by the CFL Board of Governors that representing each member club. The Governors hire a Commissioner (effectively the President & CEO) who is responsible for the day to day operation of the CFL.  There are three Governors representing the Edmonton Eskimo Football Club.  The Chairman of the Board is the Governor and the Treasurer and President & CEO are Alternate Governors.  The President & CEO is also a member of the CFL Management Council and may participate on various CFL Committees.  For further information on the CFL please visit their website at cfl.ca.

 

FIRST YEAR DELIVERABLES / MEASURES OF SUCCESS

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Empowers management to field a competitive football team that is in contention to win the Grey Cup.
  • Foster a compelling entertainment proposition that is fun, safe and affordable.
  • Develop and execute a business model that ensures long term sustainability and preserves the values and traditions of Edmonton Eskimos Football Club.
  • Maintain stability within the organization both on and off the field.

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Given the pivotal role this individual will be expected to play in achieving the strategic objectives of the Edmonton Eskimos and in supporting the success of the organization, it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following core competencies, experience and attributes:

Candidate Core Competencies:

  • Strategic Leadership: Fosters the development of a common vision providing clear direction and priorities and clarifying roles and responsibilities.  Articulates a clear and compelling image of what the organization must become.  Sets the tone for the organization’s culture and ensures succession in management and leadership.
  • Business and Financial Acumen: Has a broad-based understanding of key business fundamentals, understands the drivers of financial health and accountability of the organization and takes responsibility for maintaining its ongoing fiscal soundness.
  • Strategic Planning: Develops short and long-range plans that are comprehensive, creative, realistic and effective in meeting goals and organizational objectives, and integrates planning efforts across business units and functions.
  • Communications: Communicates effectively with stakeholders (community, government, employees, customers) on goals, plans and issues and seeks feedback and advice before acting.
  • Board Relationships: In accordance with the established governance model, acts to build a trusting relationship with the Board by being open in the sharing and receiving of information and sees Board members as partners in furthering the Edmonton Eskimos goals.

Experience

  • A minimum of a Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration;
  • Master’s in Business Administration will be considered an asset;
  • An individual with a personal interest in high-level competitive sports would be considered an asset;
  • Demonstrated financial acumen (P&L, balance sheet, return on capital invested, etc.);
  • Prior experience in a CEO capacity with an outstanding record of achievement and leadership within a dynamic and competitive industry;
  • Experience managing media and government relations; and
  • Prior experience reporting to a Board of Directors.

  • An executive capable of dealing with the “big picture” while at the same time being able to “roll up their sleeves” and work directly with the management team to accomplish the organizational goals;
  • A senior leader that embodies the “Eskimo Way”:

    • A humble but confident, self-sufficient leader with unquestioned personal and professional integrity; and
    • Direct and assertive when handling conflict management, both internally and externally (i.e. media, employees, or team).
