Title: Operations/Production Manager

Reports to: General Manager

Direct Reports: Purchasing, Maintenance/Special Projects, Fabrication, Weld, Paint, Assembly, Quality Assurance, Inventory Management and Planning.

Location:  Frontier, Saskatchewan

 

MANDATE

The Operations/Production Manager will be accountable for ensuring the safe delivery of cost effective, quality products, produced in a timely manner to customers. They will be responsible for increasing the ratio of value to non-value-added work between the four walls of the production floor, taking into consideration the inbound (people, material, information, etc.) and outbound (customer expectations and commitments) requirements and logistics to/from the plant.

Furthermore, the Operations/Production Manager will oversee the optimization of the value stream for each individual product, including the elimination of waste, while working towards the long-term goal of progressing the Production System from the current state to the future vision.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

The position will include the following responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Develop and lead the production team to execute to quality, schedule, and cost expectations for assigned product, while understanding that the key asset on the floor is the people
  • Communicate goals and strategies to the production team, while providing continuous feedback and encouragement
  • Manage and rectify production issues; delegating tasks to the team, when necessary.
  • Coordinate and interact with other functions that support the production floor
  • Grow a strong production team; identifying and developing leadership within the team
  • Foster quality staff relationships in order to gain commitment from the production team
  • Ensure compliance with ISO certification
  • Support and continuously improve safety policies and ensure appropriate training and plans are fully implemented
  • Enable employee success through sufficient workplace and systems training
  • Change Management/Lean Process Improvement
  • Ensure that a current state value stream map is created of the end-to-end value stream(s)
  • Prepare a future state that uses Lean techniques to eliminate waste and improve process value
  • Implement and execute upon specific components of continuous improvement, quality improvement and Lean production initiatives
  • Identify and rectify operational challenges; continuous measurements of performance, prioritization of production related activities and execution on opportunities to improve
  • Leads and mobilizes the people inside and outside (support functions) of the value stream to enable the achievement of improvement priorities

Day-to-day Management

  • Accountable for daily operations and meeting production goals in a timely and accurate manner
  • Define priorities within the operating framework given to implement the most efficient and effective production schedule and staffing plan
  • Implement production plans, evaluating and providing feedback around product introduction, equipment efficiency, materials supply constraints, schedules and staffing requirements to meet given product objectives
  • Oversee schedules and expenditures for direct and indirect labor. Plan details of staffing and labor expenditures around given priorities. Achieve results through the Production Team by establishing operational objectives, work plans and delegating assignments
  • Manage a safe working environment by monitoring operations for safety, ensuring that all applicable regulatory requirements are met/followed
  • Oversee preventative and reactive maintenance programs and processes

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

Leadership:

  • Oversee the manufacture of quality products and on-time delivery of completed orders to all clients
  • Execute to a budget
  • Ensure a high level of employee engagement through the effective communication of functional goals
  • Develop performance metrics for the team and ensure frequent career development feedback is provided
  • Build and establish strong working relationships with the Executive and other functional areas of the organization
  • Identify training needs and fulfill needs to budget
  • Ensure employee performance reviews are completed

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE 

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education

  • Post-secondary degree in a related discipline or a combination of education and experience appropriate to achieve the mandate

Experience

  • A minimum five (5) years’ experience in a similar role within a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in agriculture would be considered an asset
  • Proven experience providing operational leadership experience to a manufacturing production team
  • Knowledge and experience developing and managing Lean operational functions
