Our client is a publicly traded research and development organization currently focused on commercializing automated technologies designed to create efficiencies in oil and gas production.

 

THE OPPORTUNITY

Job Title:Manufacturing Controller & Inventory Specialist

Reports to:Chief Financial Officer

Location:Calgary, Alberta

 

THE MANDATE

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Manufacturing Controller & Inventory Specialist will be responsible for the procurement and negotiation of inventory purchases with vendors, provide cost reports including vendor cost comparisons and anticipated costs for each company product in order to determine customer product pricing. In addition, the incumbent will develop and implement cost accounting practices and processes to track manufacturing costs, creating annual operating budgets in conjunction with department heads and tracking actual results.

 

Key Accountabilities

The position will include the following responsibilities:

Inventory Management

  • Always maintain and identify economic order quantities to manage inventory costs as well as ensure adequate inventory on site supporting the sales and manufacturing requirements
  • Complete monthly physical inventory counts and reconciliations in conjunction with the operations staff and external auditor (for year-end count)
  • Create a robust inventory tracking system within Great Plains to identify the number of products currently available for sale and what products are ready for shipment, determine delivery timelines and potential consignment agreements
  • Input all inventory movement journal entries into the Great Plains accounting system

Operational Oversight

  • Implement and control processes for tracking production costs including all direct costs, indirect costs, inventory consumption and profitability by product using job costs in Great Plains
  • Utilize Kanban to track status and volume of orders in production and adjust inventory accordingly
  • Enable manufacturing to increase output volume
  • Ensure all necessary approvals are obtained for material requisitions and purchase orders in compliance with the company’s delegation of authority matrix before the product order is placed with the vendor
  • Prepare process flowcharts and create procedures relating to cost tracking, inventory movements and purchasing when required
  • Evaluate overall manufacturing operations including manufacturing equipment availability and utilization and make recommendations

Vender Management

  • Research and manage the contract negotiations with appropriate vendors based on pricing, quality of the product, and timing of delivery
  • Review existing vendor agreements and ensure the organization maintains an appropriate number of current suppliers to meet its customer demands
  • Liaise directly with external vendors and internal manufacturing department for all procurement requirements for internal and external manufacturing of component parts and products
  • Pro-actively identify new vendors and suppliers of raw material and specialty items using web-based search engines

Financial Accountability

  • Maintain the cost accounting application in Great Plains and complete the month-end cost accounting close
  • Prepare the annual operating budget in conjunction with department heads and monthly budget to actual reports including variance analysis
  • Work with department heads to set and monitor departmental budgets
  • Ensures that all purchases completed are made in accordance with delegations of authority established by the Company
  • Continually move the costing to a standard pricing model as volumes increase

 

FIRST YEAR DELIVERABLES / MEASURES OF SUCCESS

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Review existing operational processes and seek out opportunities for optimization
  • Successfully implement manufacturing and inventory reports and controls within Great Plains to ensure maximum cashflow and minimum material shortages
  • Build confidence and trust of the sales team and reinforce that increased sales will be met with increased product supply
  • Foster productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure on going communication between departments
  • Review current agreements in place with vendors, look for opportunities for cost savings and reduced vender lead times

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Professional accounting or supply chain designation is required
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Possess detailed understanding of product manufacturing including the creation of bill of materials and the effect on pricing. Understand how customization directly affect pricing and adjust according
  • Previous employment in a public company would be considered an asset
  • Experience using and managing Great Plains or other ERP, preferably in a manufacturing environment would be considered an asset
  • Proficiencies in Excel, Word and PowerPoint
