Manager, Human Resources – Tervita

Job Title: Manager, Human Resources

Reports to: Director, Human Resources

Direct Reports: 2 Team Leads, 1 Human Resources Administrator

Functional Areas: One – all internal client facing support groups; 10 employees in total

Location: Calgary, Alberta



Reporting to the Director, Human Resources the HR Manager contributes to the success of Tervita by providing expert human resources advice and support, both directly and indirectly through the team, to managers and employees. Provides support to the organization in regards to employee relations and the execution of HR programs that support the organization.



Key Accountabilities:

Employee Relationsprovided directly and through the HR Team

  • Establishes and maintains relationships with key stakeholders
  • Provides advice, support and coaching to Tervita employees and managers on HR matters
  • Uses strong business acumen and knowledge of the industry to recommend appropriate solutions to managers
  • Provides resolution of critical issues with respect to employee relations while always referencing legislation and Tervita policies and guidelines
  • Partners with Managers to diagnose HR issues and recommend specific HR solutions to drive desired organizational changes
  • Acts as internal resource on all performance management cases, supporting the employee, management and liaising with legal counsel
  • Supports strategy development around education and awareness on employee relation issues
  • Conducts investigations as needed
  • Recommends continuous improvement to address root issues or trends

Talent Management

  • Execution of all programs including talent acquisition, onboarding, performance reviews, employee development and performance management
  • Ensures that all HR programs, policies and processes are implemented in a manner that supports the organization’s Mission, Vision and Values
  • Provides input into talent management programs
  • Conducts training on HR topics as needed for managers and employees

HR Administration

  • Maintains HR Policies and Procedures. Reviews and recommends improvements
  • Governance and compliance for the HR team and HR related policies
  • Ensures the organization is receiving the appropriate reporting
  • Identify and implement best practices to support business growth

Team Management

  • Leads and mentors the HR team and fosters a high-performance team environment
  • Coaches and delegates but also acts as a hands-on manager when the work load requires it
  • Creates an engaging environment for the team and coaches other Managers to do the same



Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Establish necessary relationships with senior business leaders, while coaching the HR team, building credibility and continue to earn buy-in from the business
  • Build on HR programs and processes in order to strengthen employee engagement and retention
  • Assess and diagnose root cause issues and develop relevant solutions to address identified issues, themes and/or gaps, and partner with key resources (internally and externally) to deliver highly effective solutions which directly support and drive necessary business outcomes
  • Identify gaps as they relate to employee relations and create a go-forward strategy to address these areas
  • Elevate key deliverables based on understanding front-line challenges



The successful candidate will have the following:


  • University degree in Human Resources or a related discipline
  • Certification, Professional designation (CHRP) is an asset


  • 15 years in Human Resources; 5 years as a Manager
  • Experience with US based employees
  • Oil and Gas field operations knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of employment legislation; including the US
  • Investigations training

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interface at all levels within the organization

  • Proven leadership skills in coaching and leading through change
  • Minimal travel but willingness to travel to field if necessary
  • Solid business acumen
