Optimum Talent is pleased to be partnering with Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) in their search for a new Manager, Emergency Department.  Located in Ontario’s historic Huronia Region on the shores of beautiful Georgian Bay, GBGH is just 90 minutes north of Toronto.  This 116-bed hospital presently has two sites located in the municipalities of Midland and Penetanguishene. GBGH was established in 2008 following the voluntary integration of Huronia District Hospital and Penetanguishene General Hospital with a long history of providing medical services to the community dating back to the early 1900’s.

Job Title:Manager, Emergency Department
Reports to:Director, Clinical Services
Location:Midland, ON



Reporting to the Director, Clinical Services, the Manager, Emergency Department will be responsible for the quality of patient care, utilization of resources, staff development and day-to-day nursing clinic operations for Georgian Bay General Hospital’s ER department. In collaboration with the Physician Chiefs of Service, the Manager will provide leadership and direction for the planning, development, implementation, execution, and evaluation of patient care services, and will have overall accountability for the provision of expert and compassionate care consistent with the strategic plan, values, and mission of Georgian Bay General Hospital. As the senior nursing leader on site, the Manager will work closely with all clinical areas to support smooth, effective hospital operations.

As a people leader, the Manager will mentor and coach Team Leads in effective decision-making and team engagement and will provide direction to a team of over 70 nursing professionals, while ensuring that staff are trained, equipped, supported, and developed. The Manager will provide continuity in management, care, and services by liaising with Unit Managers, Directors, and the Administrator on-call, and will make decisions regarding the best use of resources to optimize patient flow, achieve an excellent quality of care, and maintain patient satisfaction.

This role will address issues that arise among patients, families, staff and other stakeholders related to the provision of patient care, including providing support and initial investigations to ensure optimal management and communication of issues, conducting effective event debriefs and enacting change. The Manager will also lead client safety and quality improvement in the Emergency Department through consultation and education on quality methodologies and client safety through knowledge of clinical best practices, legislative requirements, and policies.


Key Accountabilities

Ensures proper resource management by:

  • Selecting effective leaders for patient care programs and serving as a mentor and role model
  • Serving as an advocate for safe, quality care for patients and high-performance standards from staff
  • Overseeing and coordinating the development of clear financial plans for service – financial, human resources, supplies, and equipment
  • Analyzing financial outcomes and intervening to effect change when necessary, reviewing indicators for quality, effectiveness and efficiency of service

Provides leadership in Patient Care Delivery System by:

  • Using clinical knowledge and leadership to promote high quality, patient-focused care
  • Establishing the scope and direction of patient services consistent with the GBGH strategic plan and LHIN priorities
  • Ensuring continued development of system and processes improvements
  • Ensuring the maintenance and ongoing development of clinical policies and procedures
  • Balancing available resources to ensure an overall positive experience for our patients
  • Monitoring and maintaining acceptable standards of professional practice within the portfolio



The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Current Certificate of Competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Five (5) year’s recent, related clinical experience in emergency medicine, and progressive leadership experience, including direct supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience (i.e Critical Care Certificate).
  • Minimum three (3) year’s of recent management experience in an acute care setting
  • Training & experience in implementation of Lean Health Care improvement methods.
  • Training & experience with legislation & programs associated with Emergency Department
  • Experience in managing interdisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated success in providing leadership in a way that facilitates effective teamwork, highly developed interpersonal and negotiation skills, and the ability to develop consensus with a variety of stakeholder objectives
  • Ability to hold others accountable.
  • Strong ability to develop and foster collaborative working relationships to support the professional practice and ongoing development of staff.
  • Assist with the development and implementation programs to ensure the provision of safe, quality patient care and assist in creating inter professional practice environment that fosters creativity, growth, professional judgment, and high practice standards.
  • Ability to promote development of clinical research opportunities to ensure evidence-based practice within an interdisciplinary team-based environment.
  • Well-developed change management skills. (i.e – education related to change management)
  • Excellent communication skills to function within a complex interdisciplinary environment including ability to communicate with the physician community.
  • Committed to professional growth of self & others.
  • Coaching, facilitation, & conflict resolution skills.
  • Client service-oriented, with ability to work well with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience in facilitating, collaborating and negotiating for effective resolution of human resource issues.

  • Knowledge of legislative requirements, medical-legal issues, & a commitment to keeping abreast of changes.
  • Professional & respectful of protocol & confidentiality.
  • Skilled at developing & managing departmental budgets


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master in Nursing or health care-related field
  • Fluency in both English and French
