Owned by the City of Edmonton and managed by Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, the Edmonton EXPO Centre and Edmonton Convention Centre are two world class facilities that host a combined 1,000+ events annually. Both venues generate economic and social benefits for Edmonton and serve a critical role in positioning Edmonton as a destination for conferences, conventions and major events. Each with their own unique appeal and offerings, these two venues combined, deliver an exceptional experience to over 2 million guests and delegates each year.

A unique opportunity exists, as EEDC is looking for two (2) General Managers committed to operational excellence to lead, inspire and drive improved performance and economic impact at the Edmonton EXPO Centre and Edmonton Convention Centre.

As the largest venue of its kind outside of Toronto, the Edmonton EXPO Centre is a powerful economic catalyst, providing authentic experiences and limitless opportunities in the most imaginative event space in Canada. Designed with adaptability and grandiose scale in mind, the Edmonton EXPO Centre has deep roots in Edmonton as a place to come together for amazing event experiences. A catalyst for commerce and growth through the events it hosts, this 522,000-square-foot venue welcomes over 1.5 million visitors per year and delivers a substantial community and economic impact for our city.

Recognized by the International Association of Venue Managers as one of North America’s top five performing public assembly venues, the Edmonton Convention Centre boasts 150,000 square feet of premier event space in Edmonton’s downtown core. The Edmonton Convention Centre connects to its roots in the North Saskatchewan River Valley through sustainable business practices, a dedication to locally sourced and inspired cuisine, and a commitment to its people. As a community asset for more than 35 years, the venue hosts more than 600 events per year and plays an important role in enhancing Edmonton’s tourism economy and community.

 

THE MANDATE

Ensuring alignment with EEDC’s objectives, purpose and values, the General Manager of each venue will be a dynamic leader focused on the effective operations of one of Edmonton’s two iconic venues. With demonstrated experience leading diverse and high performing teams, each successful candidate will apply a systematic approach to bringing people together to evaluate opportunities and solve problems. Each GM will rally their team around a compelling vision, unlock employee potential and drive results to lead the team to success.

The ideal GM will thrive in managing multiple priorities, assessing complex opportunities and mobilizing resources to work towards solutions and results. Along with a high degree of business and financial acumen, candidates will have a solid operational background and a commitment to continuous improvement and lean operating principles. EEDC is seeking candidates with a proven track record of building effective business relationships, both internal and external, and a demonstrated ability to champion a positive work culture that reflects EEDC’s core values.

Following EEDC`s first year operating both the Edmonton Convention Centre and Edmonton Expo Centre, the organization is onboarding both GMs simultaneously to launch the next chapter for each venue together. The incoming General Managers have a unique opportunity to learn together, leverage the strength of each venue and create solutions to the benefit of both venues. With the support of a shared corporate services model, the General Managers will collaborate to identify opportunities for shared efficiencies and continuous improvement.

Reporting to the Vice President, Venues Management, each General Manager will be responsible for the implementation of their specific venue’s strategic plan, and supporting business plans in the venue’s Operating, Food & Beverage, Event Services and Sales & Marketing departments in alignment with EEDC’s strategic direction, culture and values. Each General Manager will operate and promote the venues to consistently meet and exceed customer expectations while achieving positive economic impact results. Each General Manager will be responsible for the overall and day-to-day operations of their venue and will work in collaboration for the shared success of their unique and iconic venues.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Strategic Leadership:

  • Ensures there is a facility management strategy in place that confirms the upkeep and preservation of the venue;
  • Works closely EEDC leadership and key stakeholders in the development of major capital improvements, renovations and infrastructure overhaul plans;
  • Develops annual venue strategic plan, inclusive of annual operating and capital budget, in support of the overall strategic direction of EEDC;
  • Champions a culture reflecting EEDC’s core values through leading by example;
  • Keeps apprised of industry best practices, trends and cycles to ensure the venue has the best possible information to address and consider emerging issues/trends in the convention, conference, trade show, meeting, entertainment and sport industries;
  • Develops and maintains relationships with key clients, partners, suppliers and stakeholders; and
  • Works in collaboration with each venue’s General Manager and Vice President, Venues Management to develop and ensure the alignment of each venue’s sales & marketing strategies to capitalize on new market opportunities.

Site Leadership:

  • Ensures their venue’s financial and operational status are managed efficiently and effectively in coordination with EEDC’s financial policies and objectives;
  • Applies a systematic and disciplined approach to continuous improvement in all areas of venue operations;
  • Develops comprehensive, creative, realistic and effective short and long term plans to achieve goals;
  • Integrates planning efforts across all business units and functions;
  • Working with the other General Manager, reviews resource allocation across both venues on an ongoing basis to create additional operational efficiencies;
  • Demonstrates understanding of the drivers of financial health and takes responsibility for maintain ongoing fiscal soundness;
  • Challenges leadership team to improve margins while preserving competitive advantages and maintaining high quality standards; and
  • Oversees the execution of approved sponsorship agreements and contracts.

People Leadership:

  • Demonstrates values-based decision making and encourages same from others;
  • Provides strong leadership for the venue to capitalize on the full potential of its people;
  • Enlists and engages all team members in the achievement of EEDC’s strategic direction, purpose, values and goals;
  • Encourages team members to identify opportunities and propose new methods of improving existing operations with a focus on bottom line results;
  • Builds, motivates and leads a team of managers with a commitment to achieving business objectives;
  • Ensures regular, ongoing communication with teams to create awareness of business goals, objectives and accountabilities;
  • Recognizes performance and achievement of results;
  • Integrates and aligns site culture with EEDC culture, values and brand promise;
  • Ensures the existence of an effective succession plan to develop necessary depth amongst the leadership team for long term success;
  • Ensures employees have necessary resources to meet job satisfaction and expected service quality; and
  • In collaboration with corporate human resources, participates in collective bargaining and the administration of the collective bargaining agreement(s), where applicable.

 

FIRST YEAR DELIVERABLES / MEASURES OF SUCCESS

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Build effective and trusting relationships across EEDC, with site staff and key stakeholders, including the other incoming General Manager;
  • Demonstrate and embody a commitment to EEDC core values;
  • Demonstrate continuous improvement with respect to improving employee engagement scores with both full and part time staff;
  • Maintain and build solid relationships with unions in preparation for 2020 collective bargaining (where applicable);
  • Demonstrate visionary thinking beyond the confines of their own venue through collaboration with EEDC leadership and in identifying opportunities to leverage shared services (ie, booking systems, procurement, staffing etc.);
  • Provide best outcomes for customers through a commitment to continuous improvement; and
  • Effectively steward the financial performance of the venue.

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education

  • Post-secondary degree in Hospitality Management, Business Management or related program.

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years progressive leadership experience in a large multi-faceted, multi-stakeholder facility;
  • Outstanding record of achievement leading high performing teams in a dynamic industry;
  • Solid operational experience with track record of success managing a diverse range of events;
  • Knowledge of the Alberta Gaming Liquor Act, Fire and Safety Regulations, Health and Food Safety Regulations and relevant employment legislation;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Edmonton region will be considered an asset;
  • Previous experience in a union environment will be considered an asset; and
  • Previous experience in a public entity will be considered an asset.
