Job Title: Executive Director

Reports to: Board of Directors, via the Board President

Direct Reports: 10 Total Full Time Employees (direct and indirect), 1 Part Time Employee

Location: Kitchener, ON



SHORE Centre is a pro-choice organization. Its activities involve providing sexual health education, pregnancy options support, and related clinical services.  All employees are bound to respect the confidentiality of clients and of other people involved with the agency.

The position of Executive Director is a full-time, salaried, permanent position with the organization. The Executive Director is responsible to the Board of Directors for the day-to-day administration of the organization in accordance with its bylaws, policies, and procedures.  The Executive Director may delegate certain duties to other members of the agency, but the ultimate responsibility will remain with them.

The Executive Director is responsible for oversight of all SHORE offices and clinics, both central and satellite, as well as all staff working on or off site. The role involves frequent travel to attend community events and meetings as well as to visit all SHORE sites.



Office, Clinic and Program Management

The Executive Director is expected to:

  • Implement and manage SHORE’s programs and services at all locations, carrying out the organization’s mission.
  • Ensure a safe, secure, positive, and professional environment for staff, service recipients, and volunteers;
  • Ensure all daily requirements for efficient office management are met, including record keeping, program statistics, personnel records, evaluation of programs, review and approval of contracts for services, payroll, banking, invoicing, the annual audit, physical and digital access, and other related duties;
  • Monitor general correspondence and ensure appropriate replies are made;
  • Assign responsibilities for office management in their absence.
  • Identify new opportunities for SHORE programs


The Executive Director will:

  • Hold overall responsibility for financial management of the agency;
  • Establish agency’s budget, in consultation with other appropriate staff and the Treasurer, for approval by the Board of Directors;
  • Monitor the status of fundraising programs and grant applications;
  • Cultivate and sustain long-term relationships with core and potential community donors and Friends of SHORE.
  • Report routine financial matters to the Board of Directors
  • Maintain relationships with major funders such as: LHIN, Region of Waterloo, Trillium, and United Way including all grants, reports, meetings etc.
  • Monitor budget through monthly reports; consult with Treasurer monthly


The Executive Director will:

  • Manage and supervise SHORE staff;
  • Uphold all of SHORE’s human resources policies and ensure SHORE remains compliant with all relevant laws and regulations;
  • Conduct evaluation of staff as outlined in the agency’s Policies and Procedures Section of the Operating Manual;
  • Assess appropriate merit salary increases for staff;
  • Hire, train, retain, manage, and terminate staff;
  • Organize staff meetings to share information and plan work loads.

Board Committee Meetings

The Executive Director will:

  • Communicate regularly with the Board and provide, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
  • Consult with President / Secretary to prepare the agenda for meetings of the Board of Directors;
  • Submit a written report to Board of Directors, one week prior to the monthly Board meetings;
  • Attend Board of Directors meetings and serve as an ex-officio member of all committees of the Board and such ad hoc committees as may be formed from time to time;
  • Establish and review agency goals and objectives as envisioned in the Strategic Plan in cooperation with the Board of Directors;
  • Develop a timeline of new agency activities based on the current Strategic plan.

Community Liaison/Outreach

The Executive Director will:

  • Represent the agency in the community and serve as spokesperson for the media;
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with community agencies which relate to the interests of the organization;
  • Maintain regular contact with Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights;
  • Make appropriate contact with Regional, Provincial, and Federal politicians regarding SHORE Centre, its work, and sexual health education and reproductive rights more generally.
  • Represent SHORE in the community as a leader of sexual health and sexual health services in Waterloo Region
  • Oversee SHORE’s social media strategy and online presence.

Professional Development

The Executive Director is expected to improve their skills and knowledge through:

  • Attendance at formal workshops;
  • Professional reading;
  • Networking with other community or inter-agency professionals.


The Executive Director will:

  • Assume responsibilities, within reason, of other staff members or volunteers when they are absent;
  • Carry out such other duties as may be assigned by the Board of Directors from time to time.



  • Knowledge of and passion for sexual health and an ability to work in a feminist organization
  • Demonstrated collaborative approach to work; able to understand and incorporate the requirements of a multi-site organization
  • Budget and financial management skills, including budgeting process, analysis, decision-making and reporting
  • success leading in politically challenging causes
  • proven track record in fundraising – both private donor and foundation/government grants
  • Experience building and maintaining community engagement and partnerships,
  • Media relations experience; exceptional public speaking skills
  • Excellent people and resource management skills
  • Creative, solutions-oriented approach
  • Asset: Post-secondary education in a relevant field
  • Asset: Experience in non-profit management, counselling, community development, social services
  • Asset: Experience in a clinical or health services setting; or knowledge of clinical health services related risk
  • Asset: Experience working with a volunteer board of directors
