Executive Director – Ride for Dad

THE ORGANIZATION

The Ride For Dad (RFD) is a national not-for-profit corporation which raises money through donations, third party events and various fundraising initiatives events across Canada. It has been in existence since 2000 and has raised over $29 million through motorcycle, snowmobile, ATV, watercraft and other events across Canada.

“The mission of the Ride For Dad is to raise funds to save men’s lives by supporting prostate cancer research and raising public awareness of the disease.”

How the Ride for Dad Began:

The Ride for Dad was founded by two men, Garry Janz and Byron Smith.

While working on a Kingston Regional Cancer Centre production, Garry interviewed patients to create stories for the docudrama, one of them was a prostate cancer patient, Charlie Pester. Sadly, Charlie was losing his battle against the disease. During one of their first interviews Charlie has confided to Garry that: “If I had been tested earlier, I would not be going home to plan my funeral today.”

Over the months spent together, Garry and Charlie became friends and Garry was more determined to do something about changing attitudes towards prostate cancer. He came up with the idea of taking his new hobby, “motorcycling”, and turning it into an event for prostate cancer. To this day, Garry credits Charlie with being the impetus for the Ride and Charlie remains the spirit that keeps Garry going.

In 2000, Garry was introduced to Byron Smith and the Ride for Dad was born.

Byron Smith is the National Ride Captain and co-founder of the Ride for Dad. Byron, a retired Ottawa Police Officer, was the Chair of the Ottawa Police Association in 2000 when he met Garry Janz at a coffee shop. Byron was looking for a worthy charity to involve his members in and Garry had a story to tell. Both were avid motorcycle riders, so Garry’s vision of a Prostate Cancer Research and Awareness got wheels, the Motorcycle Ride for Dad was born. With his Police Association contacts, Byron was able to forge a strong bond between the Motorcycle Ride for Dad and police associations in communities right across the country.

With just over 80 motorcycle riders, the first ride raised $20,000. The Ride for Dad now includes motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs, and personal watercraft events and has donated more than $13 million towards prostate cancer research and awareness.

 

THE OPPORTUNITY

THE MANDATE

The Ride for Dad (RFD) founders are proud of what they have accomplished utilizing their passion for the cause, love of riding, and ability to connect with communities across Canada to get their message to the masses.   However, the founders feel that it’s time to take the next step and hire an Executive Director who can take RFD to the next level.

Reporting to the Ride for Dad Board of Directors and working with the Management Team, the Executive Director will manage and administer all aspects of the operation of the RFD. He/she will give strategic direction to all fundraising entities acting under agreement with the Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation (PCFF) to ensure protection of brand equity and consistency of public messaging. The ED will provide creative and strategic leadership to staff in the national office. The primary responsibilities will include establishing goals, fund development, communications, fiscal management, organizational development and sustainability. This is a fulltime position located in Ottawa.

RFD has over 40 events annually running mainly between the months of May and August.  The Executive Director will be present at these events hosted on weekends to be the primary speaker at the events communicating the importance of this exceptional organization.

Key Accountabilities:

Overall

  • Achieve the organization’s financial objectives through national sponsorships, major gifts, corporate giving, grants and donations and monitor the organization’s fiscal management
  • Working with the Board of Directors, develop a three-year Strategic Plan for approval.
  • Using the Strategic Plan as the foundation, develop and manage the annual business plan and its accompanying annual budget for approval.
  • Guide the transformation of this organization from a “hands on, passion-driven” operation, to a strong multifaceted national organization without giving up the qualities that have made it a success
  • Provide guidance and support to the Board, its committees, chapter executives and other senior volunteers
  • Lead the development of policies and procedures relevant to the corporation’s goals and objectives
  • Take the initiative and work both independently and in collaboration with staff, volunteers and donors
  • Provide overall administration of the day-to-day affairs of the organization and leadership to staff

Fundraising

  • Develop goals and a business plan to ensure sustainability and the future financial growth of the organization
  • Play a leadership role in the acquisition and stewardship of national sponsors
  • Develop new avenues to raise money through such initiatives as direct mail, cause-related marketing. etc.

Financial

  • Oversee the management of all financial matters within the corporation
  • Ensure that the RFD follows all CRA guidelines and regulations
  • Ensure effective internal controls for the protection of organizational assets
  • Take responsibility for the annual budget and ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work

Marketing/Communications

  • Ensure the organization has a comprehensive and progressive marketing and communications strategy
  • Act as a representative and spokesperson for the organization, as required, for public and media enquiries
  • Seek opportunities to partner with national corporations, organizations and individuals that will advance our cause
  • Establish, develop and maintain strong ongoing media relations
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to business leaders, executives and potential sponsors

Administration/Personnel

  • Oversee human resource management, recruitment and release of all personnel, both paid and volunteer
  • Ensure job descriptions are developed; that regular performance evaluations are held; and that sound human resource practices are in place
  • Create a healthy and happy office environment by demonstrating leadership, mentoring staff and ensure adequate training is provided

Relationship with Committees

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors and the Management Team on all aspects of the organization by providing sound counsel and guidance including matters relating to the allocation of funds to research and awareness
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of all committees including the Management Team and the Board of Directors and establish new committees as required
  • Direct and assist committees with the development and execution of plans and projects, ensuring that all committees meet their mandate

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field with 5-7 years of senior management experience
  • Extensive experience in marketing, fundraising or sales, and communications
  • Experience in event planning and management an asset either professional or volunteer
  • Success in the creation of a business plan with a focus on developing the future growth of an organization

 

THE COMPENSATION

Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience.
