Superior Propane operates a national propane distribution and propane services business with an over 40% market share, distributing over 1.5 billion litres annually to over 200,000 residential, commercial, industrial, oilfield, and agricultural customers coast-to-coast in Canada. Its Distribution Planning & Scheduling, Transportation Optimization & Supply Logistics take place in three National Operations Centers located in Guelph Ontario, Calgary Alberta, and Sainte-Catherine Quebec.  The Company locally operates across five Canadian geographical regions, 46 Market locations and over 160 distribution points.  With over 600 Propane Delivery vehicles and 400 Service vehicles, Superior Propane faces significant distribution delivery & scheduling challenges due to geographical scope, widely varying customer consumption patterns, changing weather conditions, and unpredictable order size and delivery frequency.  The annual operating budget is approximately $240m, with 80% of spend directly attributed to people and vehicle expenses.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Job Title: Director, Western Delivery & Service, Calgary

Reports to: Deliver Manager (3); Service Manager (3); Delivery & Service Specialist (1); Office Co-Ordinator (1); Total team of approximately 60.

THE MANDATE

Located in Calgary, Alberta and reporting directly to the Vice President of Western Operations, the Director Western Delivery & Service will have bottom-line accountability for developing and implementing strategic mid-range and short-term business strategies that lead and direct a central operations team supporting the regional business to achieve pre-determined financial, operational, customer service and safety goals and objectives that are aligned to long-term strategies developed by the executive team.

The Director Western Delivery and Service is accountable for the safe and efficient routing and scheduling and dispatching of propane delivery and installation teams in Western Canada. The role is responsible for driving effective utilization of field resources that support bottom line growth.  This support manifests through route management and optimization, continuous process improvement, supporting and implementing technology advancements in the operations, and a strong focus on positive customer experiences.  The ideal candidate will be a talented operational leader with prior P&L oversight in a people-intensive organization, a strong customer service orientation, a deep sense of ownership for his/her business, and a supportive management style.  He/she must have a proven track record of managing complex projects where success is a result of pulling various components/groups together in one unified direction; he/she must be a proven operator with an ability to drive results at a very tactical level; and he/she must have excellent communication skills and the wherewithal to effectively navigate a dispersed regional organization with unique individual market demands.

Key Accountabilities

The Director Western Delivery & Service will have overall accountability for the smooth operation of the Western Delivery and Service teams including expense management, people management, operational effectiveness, safety and customer service. More specifically, he/she will:

  • Lead, mentor, coach and develop direct and indirect employees by providing clear direction, guidance and support in coordination with the overall strategy:
    • instill a sense of professionalism and excellence; and
    • promote and enforce the highest standards for safety and customer service fostering a culture of continuous improvement; and
    • set and monitor objective goals providing constructive feedback and ongoing performance management;
    • develop a talent pool and succession plan within the team for Superior Propane’s current and future success.
    • Build a collaborative customer centric culture within the Western Operation Centre
  • Develop and direct the execution of strategic mid-range and short-term business strategies that are aligned to long term goals of the organization to meet key performance targets and assist in the achievement of the overall organizational objectives.
  • Optimize delivery and installation service activity by anticipating customer consumption and demand, building delivery and service plans to align with field resources
  • Consistently meet standards of customer service and operational excellence by achieving pre-determined targets and standards by efficient routing, forecasting and scheduling of customer deliveries and service requirements across all regions
  • Enforce and promote the highest safety standards in all activities. Leverage available resources and subject matter experts to meet regulatory standards and guidelines.
  • Leverage national resources and standards by collaborating with subject matter experts to make informed business decisions and execute programs effectively and successfully.
  • Promote and enforce compliance to standardized policies and procedures ensuring they are maintained after implementation.
  • Develop, track and monitor performance metrics communicating results and enforcing accountability within your team.
  • Create, manage and oversee budgets and forecasts. Manage expenses on a monthly basis tracking to budget and continuously working toward the successful achievement of the annual budget and goals.
  • Promote and foster positive relations with employees, customers and the general public through ongoing communication and timely response to issues and concerns.

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The successful candidate will have the following:

Organizational Leadership

Strong leadership capabilities to instill a positive and productive work environment for our employees coupled with 10+ years’ experience leading a function or region in a related industry with a solid understanding of field operations, distribution, logistics, analytics and customer experience.

Expense Management

Previous budget an expense accountability with a track record of managing safe operations and delivering profitable results.

Change Management

Significant achievements in change management where success depends on building trust and gaining support with multiple stakeholders.

Delivery and Service Industry Knowledge

Ideally experience in a highly distributed distribution delivery and service organization with a strong focus on logistics.

Education

A university degree preferably in business and/or engineering.
