Superior Propane operates a national propane distribution and propane services business with an over 40% market share, distributing over 1.5 billion litres annually to over 200,000 residential, commercial, industrial, oilfield, and agricultural customers coast-to-coast in Canada. Its Distribution Planning & Scheduling, Transportation Optimization & Supply Logistics take place in three National Operations Centers located in Guelph Ontario, Calgary Alberta, and Sainte-Catherine Quebec.  The Company locally operates across five Canadian geographical regions, 46 Market locations and over 170 distribution points.  With over 600 Propane Delivery vehicles and 400 Service vehicles, Superior Propane faces significant distribution delivery & scheduling challenges due to geographical scope, widely varying customer consumption patterns, changing weather conditions, and unpredictable order size and delivery frequency.  The annual operating budget is approximately $240m, with 80% of spend directly attributed to people and vehicle expenses.

Job Title: Director, Logistics & Delviery Optimization

Reports to: Vice President, Customer Experience

Direct Reports: Program Manager – Tank Sensors; Program Manager – Superior Way; Delivery Specialists (3); Logistics Analyst (1).

Reporting to the VP Customer Experience, the newly created role of Director Logistics & Delivery Optimization will be a lynch pin between business strategies and operational execution. This role will work with the VP Customer Experience to develop business strategies that align with corporate objectives. Then along with a small team of specialists the Director will develop and implement mid-range plans to support the regional business units. These plans will include financial, operational, customer services and safety goals. The Director is directly responsible for developing the logistics forecasting and planning needed to meet delivery and cost efficiency targets. This will require close collaboration with the regional General manager as well as the Eastern and Western Operations centres to fully understand their requirements. Those requirements will be blended with corporate goals and initiatives on route optimization, assets maximization, resource planning, and process improvement.

The ideal candidate will be a talented operational leader with a strong customer service orientation, deep expertise in logistics coupled with a sense of ownership, a sense of ownership for his/her business and a supportive management style.  He/she must have a proven track record of managing complex projects where success is a result of pulling various components/groups together in one unified direction. He/she must have excellent communication skills and the wherewithal to effectively navigate a dispersed regional organization with unique individual market demands.

This role is an exciting opportunity to lead one of the key strategic functions of a $800 million Canadian icon. The successful candidate will be able to operate both at the strategic and tactical level, be able to translate strategies into executable plans with the active engagement of their regional colleagues. This will require the ability and desire to engage people at all levels and the innate competency of being accountable for results.


Key Accountabilities

The Director Logistics & Delivery Optimization  will have overall accountability to lead, develop and implement best in class systems and processes that utilize technology to optimize the delivery and service functions for the organization surpassing customer expectations. More specifically, he/she will:

  • Oversee the development of the Logistics forecasting & planning model, processes and tools to deliver information to the operational teams to enable flawless performance on service level and cost efficiency
  • Lead the development of processes for long range capacity planning, 30-60-90 day operational planning and optimize delivery and installation service activity
  • Lead the development of KPIs, analytics & reporting
  • Partner with Finance and Operations to complete the annual budgeting and manpower planning process for the business as required
  • Cultivate logistics best practices and disseminate to the organization to drive performance
  • Help to define and maintain the matrix relationships with local markets; set standards and boundaries for local execution & decision making
  • Develop exceptional, accountable relationships with key stakeholders
  • Consistently meet standards of customer service and operational excellence by achieving pre-determined targets and standards by efficient routing, forecasting and scheduling of customer deliveries and service requirements
  • Leverage national resources and standards by collaborating with subject matter experts to make informed business decisions and execute programs effectively and successfully.
  • Develop promote and enforce compliance to standardized policies and procedures ensuring they are maintained after implementation.



The successful candidate will have the following:

Organizational Leadership

Strong leadership capabilities to instill a positive and productive work environment for our employees coupled with 10+ years’ experience leading a function or region in a related industry with a solid understanding of field operations, distribution, logistics, analytics and customer experience.

 Expense Management

Previous budget an expense accountability with a track record of managing safe operations and delivering profitable results.

 Change Management

Significant achievements in change management where success depends on building trust and gaining support with multiple stakeholders.

 Planning & Execution

Significant experience developing strategic plans and the tactics to drive business results.

 Delivery and Service Industry Knowledge

Ideally experience in a highly distributed distribution delivery and service organization with a strong focus on logistics.


A university degree preferably in business and/or engineering.
