Director, Global Tax – Kal Tire

Job Title: Director, Global Tax

Reports to: CFO (Chief Financial Officer)

Direct Reports: 2

Location: Vernon, British Columbia



Reporting to the CFO, the Director, Global Tax will have responsibility for all aspects of Canadian income tax compliance and planning, as well as oversight of foreign income tax compliance and planning. Additionally, the Director, Global Tax has non-tax related responsibilities in Canada which include all aspects of compliance with tire and paper levy legislation as well as managing the WCB remittance process.

Key Accountabilities

Foreign/ Global

  • Design and lead the tax strategy and compliance activities globally
  • Review foreign corporate income tax calculations, income tax filings, tax rate reconciliations, deferred tax calculations and income tax payable/ receivable continuity schedules
  • Liaise with external tax advisors in all jurisdictions
  • Ascertain that we are in compliance with applicable tax legislation
  • Understand tax risks and keep the Canadian group apprised
  • Research and provide timely tax analysis on structures for projects and operations
  • Liaise with the operations, foreign finance team and external tax advisor’s with respect to tax matters and strategies for new geographic or business expansion
  • Intercompany financing, interest rate implications, interest deductibility implications, tax implications applicable to the repatriation of funds
  • Consult on tax minimization and cash repatriation strategies as required
  • Monitor the impact of thin capitalization regimes on the deductibility of interest

Canadian Operations- Taxes, Levies and WCB

  • Annual preparation of the Canadian income tax and information returns
  • Monthly/ quarterly filing of the Canadian GST, PST and QSR returns
  • Monthly/quarterly/ annual process of filling the various provincial tire and paper levy returns
  • Monthly/ quarterly process of various WCB remittances
  • Design and maintain processes to ensure compliance with these remittances
  • Consult and advise the business on tax matters, including:
  • Tax minimization strategies
  • Tax due diligence on potential acquisitions
  • Acquisition structuring and funding
  • Taxable benefit planning from a payroll perspective
  • Review, research and provide guidance on compliance issues
  • Changes in legislation related to tire and paper levies
  • Ensure the business systems and processes are in place that permit us to:
  • Effectively manage our tax risk and any related exposures
  • Correctly file and support all forms of returns we file and remittances we make
  • Capture information necessary for compliance at source and maintain it in our records
  • Work to ensure the operating effectiveness of the controls put in place to manage tax risk
  • Audit defense, defend our various returns and filing positions taken on audits of:
  • Income Tax
  • Indirect Tax
  • Payroll Tax

Transfer pricing

  • Understand and continually monitor the evolution of the business to ensure current transfer pricing methodologies remain relevant and applicable
  • Work with the global finance teams to ensure global consistency in the approach to foreign transfer pricing
  • Audit defense, liaise with external advisors and foreign finance teams in the event of foreign transfer pricing audits
  • Design and implement processes to meet the Country-by-Country reporting requirements
  • Monitor the changing transfer pricing landscape globally and communicate to the business any required modifications to the processes as a result of legislative changes
  • Co-ordinate and monitor the update of contemporaneous transfer pricing documentation
  • Liaise with external tax advisors with respect to regulatory and compliance matters in all jurisdictions in which we carry on business
  • Liaise with operations and foreign finance teams with respect to execution of and compliance with transfer pricing initiatives

Corporate Records

  • Maintain records of our corporate structure
  • Liaise with operations and/or legal counsel to ensure we are in compliance with corporate and other regulatory filings in all jurisdictions

Team Member Development

  • Support the growth and development of other team members in the tax group
  • Build and optimize the tax team with a focus on delivering high quality service by streamlining processes and providing strategic and tactical advice

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Gain the trust and confidence of the international finance and leadership teams
  • Further develop, design and lead the tax department in defining a transformational international tax strategy
  • Evaluate, create and implement recommendations with respect to best practices which further enhance the tax function on a global basis
  • Provide effective leadership and counsel to the direct reports and other members of the global finance teams

The successful candidate will have the following:


  • Designated CPA
  • Completion of CICA In-Depth Tax Program


  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as a dedicated tax professional
  • Exposure to management of an international tax function at a head of office level
