The Opportunity

Reports to:Senior Vice President, Finance; Maclab Properties Group
Direct Reports:5: Treasury Accountant, Senior Corporate Accountant, Corporate Accountant (x2) and Accounting Assistant

As Maclab Properties Group enters a new phase of its international growth, the Director, Financial Reporting will be joining the company at a pivotal time and will play a key role in establishing best practices with respect to all corporate reporting. Based in Edmonton and reporting to the Senior Vice President, Finance, the Director, Financial Reporting will be a key member of the finance team.  The successful candidate will provide leadership and be responsible for all aspects of the financial and budget reporting for Maclab Properties Group.

The Director, Financial Reporting will support and assist with the implementation, maintenance and review of internal controls, corporate policies and procedures. This role will also collaborate and coordinate on a regular basis with Maclab’s Director, Tax and the Controller at Midwest Property Management.


Key Accountabilities

The position will include the following responsibilities:

Accounting/Finance Leadership:

  • Prepares and submits accurate monthly and quarterly financial statements including year ended audited financial statements with notes to the financial statements;
  • Ensures compliance with both ASPE and US GAAP;
  • Coordinates, directs, plans and executes the financial reporting component of the external audit;
  • Leads all financial research efforts to ensure MPG is apprised of and reporting on current disclosure standards issued by ASPE and US GAAP;
  • Prepares memorandums regarding Maclab’s position and impact on the company;
  • Writes, implements, and ensures effective and practical implementation of corporate policies;
  • Prepares budget and regular forecasting including cash flow planning and reporting;
  • Liaises with other members of the finance department, Midwest Property Management accounting, legal counsel, and external independent auditors (including CRA auditors);
  • Assists the Director, Tax as required with various CRA inquiries and audits; and
  • Assists with various projects as assigned by the Senior Vice President, Finance.

  • Supervises and conducts performance appraisals, discipline staff, motivate staff to perform tasks on time, etc.

First Year Deliverables / Measures of Success

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the organization and its financial systems;
  • Build exceptional, collaborative relationships across the organization and with third party partners;
  • Provide supportive leadership demonstrating high integrity to their accounting team;
  • Ensure the seamless day to day operations and delivery of accurate, comprehensive and timely reporting;
  • Lead the delivery of a successful year-end and audit process;
  • Complete the automation of various management reports by leveraging existing ERP systems and other tools available; and
  • Introduce new processes and systems to enhance existing business policies and procedures (i.e. automation of expenses report).


Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will have the following:


  • A Bachelor’s Degree, in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration supplemented with a professional accounting designation (CPA).



  • A minimum 5 years relevant financial experience and a minimum of 2 years’ experience in a leadership role;
  • Must possess a strong understanding of ASPE;
  • Understanding of US GAAP will be considered an asset, including willingness to learn and be proficient in it;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and computer accounting software;
  • Familiarity with MicroSoft Dynamics, CaseWare, Jet Reports, and TaxPrep;
  • Experience in tax reviews is an asset; and
  • Previous experience within in the real estate industry considered an asset.
