THE ORGANIZATION

Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) is one of Canada’s oldest national voluntary organizations. Founded in 1918 by Dr. Clare Hincks, the organization’s goals at the time included fighting mental illness and promoting mental health. Over 25,000 members and volunteers support the activities and programs of the Association throughout Canada. These activities range from direct services to individuals with a mental illness and their families, to public education, community action, and advocacy.

CMHA Calgary was established in 1955 and is dedicated to promoting mental health and wellness through a comprehensive range of community-based services for individuals, families, groups, and organizations. It is CMHA Calgary’s mission to be a leader in reducing the impact of mental illness and addiction in community. For more than 65 years, they have provided a person and family-centered integrated service model focused on early intervention and prevention of a mental health or substance use concern that delivers a measurable increase in community resiliency.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Job Title: Director, Development & Communications

Reports to: Executive Director

Direct Reports: 2 – Manager of Philanthropy and Stewardship, Manager of Communications

Location: Calgary, AB

 

THE MANDATE
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director, Development & Communications is responsible for designing, implementing, and directing an integrated and comprehensive philanthropy and community engagement program that promotes interaction, connection and strong relationships with donors and the community at all levels.
The Director, Development & Communications will work closely with the Executive Leadership Team to determine CMHA’s business development strategy focused on opportunities that will extend the organization’s reach, attract new supporters, and promote collaboration with external partners. They will tell the story of CMHA Calgary, elevate the brand and be responsible for all of the organizations’ fundraising initiatives in major giving, annual giving, and donor recognition and stewardship.
The successful candidate will be a self-starter who can balance their time between contributing to fundraising strategy, identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a portfolio of prospects and donors and coaching a high performing team.

Key Accountabilities:
Leadership:
• Actively build trusting relationships with others

Philanthropy and Stewardship:
• Lead the successful development and implementation of a comprehensive philanthropy program that includes, major or principal gifts, annual campaigns, planned giving and special events
• Work in partnership with other departments to create strategies for developing donor relations/stewardship standards across CMHA Calgary for the purpose of creating an energetic and enthusiastic culture of philanthropy
• Evaluate the quality and impact of the philanthropy and stewardship program which includes major donors, fundraising events and campaigns, gift agreements, stewardship, management of information, and privacy compliance
• Provide advice and counsel on the organizations’ methods for fundraising through utilizing data and innovative thinking while building a balanced portfolio of prospects, donors, programs etc.
• Identify and address fund development challenges and areas for improvement
• Curate and implement innovative strategic funding opportunities for short and long-term fund development plans and programs
• Build and increase support for the organization through active participation in identifying, cultivating, and stewarding relationships and connections focusing on creating long-term relationships which lead to recurring giving from donors
• Build a sales and entrepreneurial culture across the organization through inspiring leadership, education, passion and engagement of employees and volunteers
• Successfully manage the fundraising budget, allocating resources appropriately and identifying opportunities for diversification of revenue streams

Business Development:
• Provides advice and contributes to decision-making by making recommendations based on the synthesis of information from stakeholders and environmental scans (i.e. from research, competitive and market analysis)
• Designs business models (including financial forecasting, market sizing and pricing models) and works closely with external stakeholders to guide and navigate business development opportunities
• Schedules and coordinates meetings with external stakeholders and internal Executive Leadership Team members in the development of projects
• Develop and monitor strategic and business plans and contribute to integrated strategic and business planning activities
• Manages proposal response process, including detailed RFP requirements, content creation, and inputs from various sources

Community Engagement:
• Lead the successful development and implementation of a comprehensive community engagement program
• Long-term planning and management of CMHA Calgary communication and marketing strategies
• Effectively lead the organization in Marketing and Communications and serve as a creative resource in identifying and developing new methods of donor communications, through innovative value propositions and digital story telling
• Support the Executive Director in public affairs/external engagement, representing CMHA Calgary
• Identify opportunities to promote CMHA Calgary and its programs through media, outreach events, website etc.
• Develop and nurture partnerships in the media and strategize on issues, crisis communications and positioning
• Initiate and engage in complex partnerships to enable core service expansion for a diversity of clients and community members
• Actively build relationships with businesses, individuals, and partners, understanding their challenges, interests and needs, and tailor proposals and partnerships that tangibly address those interests
• Identify areas for social enterprise and opportunity for collaboration with other agencies in the space

FIRST YEAR DELIVERABLES / MEASURES OF SUCCESS
Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Build trusting relationships with direct reports and internal stakeholders at all levels by modelling thoughtful, authentic, and adaptive leadership
  • Thoughtfully integrate into CMHA Calgary by understanding the organization’s history, mission, vision, and values with the ability to share the organizations compelling story with stakeholders
  • In collaboration with members of the Executive Leadership Team, define CMHA Calgary’s value proposition and develop a business development strategy that aligns with the value proposition
  • Recognize and understand the changing donor landscape, by defining the donor journey and identifying alternative methods to reach and engage with various donor demographics
  • Shift to a culture of philanthropy within the organization
  • Work with the Executive Director and the Board Fund Development Committee to determine the short- and long-term strategy for fund development, conduct an audit/assessment of what is currently in place and develop the business plan to address identified gaps and secure required resources to meet strategic objectives

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE
The successful candidate will have the following:

Education
•Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communication, Business, and/or Finance
•Master’s Degree preferred

Experience
•Minimum of five years’ experience in a senior leadership role overseeing business development, philanthropy, stewardship, and community engagement programs
•Demonstrated success in sales, fund development, corporate start-up, stakeholder relations, public affairs, corporate responsibility, and community investment
• Experience working in the non-profit and/or mental health sector would be considered an asset
• Solid knowledge of ethical principles and best practices related to fundraising, prospect research, donor relations and communications
