Municipal Group of Companies, led by Dexter Construction, is the largest civil contractor in Atlantic Canada and is comprised of more than 20 diversified business units. Privately held, MGC, who grew from a family business, today employs some 4,000 people. As the Company continues to grow, it is now going through change management and has undertaken to restructure at executive levels. In order to complete an expanding team based out of their main office in Bedford, Nova Scotia, Municipal Group of Companies is currently seeking a General Manager, Heavy Civil Construction.
Reporting to the Vice President, Heavy Civil Construction, Atlantic Canada, you will oversee and support the superintendents of the Heavy Civil division. You will play a key role in job handover meetings, including critical path scheduling, document organization and control, equipment and manpower requirements, and review of the estimate for completeness of take-off, scope and pricing. You will regularly review up-to-date project progress information, including critical path scheduling and work-in-progress reports. You will also review project job cost reports and oversee cost control by developing the project budget with the estimator and superintendent to ensure maximum profitability.
You will work with the superintendents to coordinate the activities of foremen and subcontractor work crews as required, as well as visit project sites for troubleshooting and to ensure project quality. You will also be responsible for the overall safety of all manpower working on the contract, proactively supporting the corporate safety program and setting a positive example. You will provide on-going support to field personnel to help identify and remove obstacles that impede construction progress and to resolve challenges with the respective owners. You will coordinate, price, and process change orders or technical problems with owner requirements, suppliers, superintendents, and subcontractors and utilize estimating when required. You will resolve change orders with owners timely and provide them assistance in modifications.
Among your main challenges, you will have to manage, support and ultimately oversee numerous high-profile construction projects across Atlantic Canada. To ensure the success of said projects, you will work closely with the executive staff to monitor their budgets and schedules, and make sure that safety standards are always met. You will troubleshoot any issues before they have negative impacts on the projects. Your leadership position will require you to serve as a role model and mentor: you will help others develop as leaders, inspires coworkers to attain goals and pursue excellence and identify opportunities for their improvement, while remaining on the forefront of emerging industry practices.
