Corporate Planning Advisor – WZR Development ULC


WZR Development ULC is a privately owned, petroleum operating company, active in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq exploring for, developing, and producing crude oil and natural gas. It has active petroleum operations in two blocks approximately 30km apart, located in the Garmian area of southern Kurdistan. As well as its current operations, WZR also pursues opportunities elsewhere in the Middle East and in other parts of the world.

WZR founders have been pursuing petroleum opportunities in the Kurdistan Region since the mid-2000s. As one of the first companies to enter the Region after the Second Gulf War, WZR selected exploration lands that were geologically similar to the historic super-giant Kirkuk oilfield. The remarkable geology of the region features multiple stacked reservoirs many of which are oil-bearing and/or over pressured. This makes for technically challenging drilling. The company began drilling a series of exploration wells in May 2008. The company has achieved two significant discoveries. Sarqala, located in the Garmian block is a producing oilfield. Kurdamir, located in the Kurdamir block, is a large discovery – a significant natural gas cap over an oil leg that has yet to be fully delineated. Independently audited resource reports estimate the Garmian and Kurdamir blocks contain prospective resources of over one billion barrels of oil equivalent.

Job Title:Corporate Planning Advisor
Reports to:Director, Business Development & Planning
Location:Calgary, AB



Reporting to the Director, Business Development & Planning, the Corporate Planning Advisor will be responsible to provide comprehensive advice to senior leadership regarding all financial facets planning, budgeting, and forecasting for the corporation. This role is critical in the construction and communication of the business plan for the organization, the development of the budget and the creation of a regular forecasting process.

The position will play a key role in assisting the maturing, coordination and drive for the corporate planning, budgeting, and monthly forecasting processes, including the analysis and presentation of the same. The role will provide support to the existing business and to the new ventures activity, working closely with multi-disciplined stakeholders to understand and communicate how various business choices impact the company.  Using financial modeling and analysis, the incumbent will provide the financial intelligence to allow the organization to project and deliver on its business objectives.

Key Accountabilities:

Business Analysis:

  • Work closely with asset team members to translate the company’s strategic objectives into the annual budget and plan, manage and carry out a course of action to achieve these objectives
  • Coordinate, consolidate and prepare presentation material for the annual budget and monthly forecasting process
  • Assist with assurance that budget and plans are consistent with integrated schedules and stage gate decision processes for asset development
  • Work with stakeholders to form KPIs based on forecasted business plans and monitor and report on those KPIs on a routine basis
  • Manipulate data and data mining and translate complex financial data into user friendly reports, graphs, charts, and models
  • Report to management on progress, issues and solutions that could impact operations and delivery of business plans
  • Identify areas and maintain appropriate measures for risk and participate in possible mitigation strategies

Corporate Planning:

  • Provide support to the business through data collection, research, and analysis to support strategy and initiatives, and to ensure capital cost estimates and production profiles are reasonable and consistent
  • Support planning activities by leading the development of detailed economic evaluations and portfolio scenario modelling of oil and gas projects and asset areas
  • Develop and reflect the economic contract terms of a production sharing contract in the corporate model for existing and potential projects
  • Develop, compile, and maintain a benchmarking database including key competitor financial, production and relevant KPIs for direct internal comparison
  • Prepare and present data, economic evaluations and modelling to Senior Management and the Executive Leadership Team ensuring the business understands the opportunities, risks, and uncertainties of business objectives
  • Support other strategic initiatives and/or special projects as directed from the executive and asset management

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Develop an effective and detailed economic evaluation and model of oil and gas projects and asset areas
  • Utilizing financial modeling and analysis, provide the financial intelligence (projections and plans) required by leadership to evaluate potential development and growth opportunities for the company
  • Develop, compile, and maintain a benchmarking database for peer reviews including key competitor financial, production and relevant KPIs for internal comparison


The successful candidate will have the following:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Finance, Engineering, Economics, or related field
  • CA, CMA, CFA, or MBA designation is considered an asset


  • Minimum of eight years’ total related industry experience with experience in banking, finance and/or oil and gas industry preferred
  • Experience with strategic planning, valuations, and economics, developing profitable strategies and maturing processes
  • Experience in an international setting and production sharing regimes is considered an asset

Competencies and Attributes

  • Strong understanding of performance management and corporate finance principles
  • Strong hands-on proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite software especially Excel
  • Awareness of industry specific software
