The Opportunity

Reports to:President and Chief Executive Officer
Direct Reports:7: Property Accountant (x3), Accounts Receivable Coordinator (x2) and Account Payable Clerk (x2)
Location:Edmonton, Alberta



As Mayfield Management Group continues to grow their property management portfolio, they are seeking an exceptionally strong Controller to join their team. The Controller will support the seamless operations of their accounting and finance operations, provide outstanding leadership to their accounting team and build exceptionally collaborative relationships across the organization.

Reporting to the President & CEO, this role is required to effectively manage all aspects of the day-to-day accounting and finance operations of Mayfield Management Group including accounts payable, budgeting, forecasting, accounts receivable, bank account reconciliation, cash management, variance analysis and financial reporting.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a collaborative, supportive approach to building relationships across the organization and a commitment to integrity, doing the right thing and seeking solutions. The Controller will possess a strong work ethic, commitment to meeting deadlines, excellent time management skills and will thrive in an integrated reporting environment.

Key Accountabilities

The position will include the following responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

  • Build collaborative relationships across Mayfield Management Group;
  • In collaboration with the leadership team, develop and execute an industry leading corporate finance strategy;
  • Create standard operating procedures for the accounting/finance functions; and
  • Assist in special assignments as assigned by the President & CEO.


Accounting/Finance Leadership:

  • Complete operational reporting and analysis, working closely with Senior Management and external auditors to ensure proper compliance;
  • Budget preparation, including development of revenue and expense budgets, and capital expenditures;
  • Ensure alignment to Mayfield Management Group’s strategic vision;
  • Provide vision, oversight, and support in the delivery of the financial plan;
  • Support the Company ownership in building and maintaining relationships with financial institutions, including preparing and presenting various current and projected financial results;
  • Analyze and review internal processes and provide recommendations for improvement;
  • Champion new software implementation as well as on-going maintenance;
  • Approve vendor invoicing;
  • Review and approve management fees;
  • Review financial packages for “high profile” properties;
  • Liaise with corporate tax accounting firm to help with preparation of corporate taxes, file adjusting entries and close out the yearends for Mayfield Management Group & Mayfield Management Maintenance
  • Evaluate current process through the lends of continuous improvement to ensure excellence in financial and operational efficiency; and
  • Complete basic accounting functions such as:
    • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements as per owner’s specifications;
    • A/P, A/R, G/L, bank reconciliations and payroll;
    • Monitoring cash flow;
    • Preparing GST remittance returns for Mayfield Management Group & Mayfield Management Maintenance;
    • Preparing detailed reconciliations and assisting external auditing firm with year-end reports;
    • Month end reporting for Mayfield Management Group & Mayfield Management Maintenance;
    • Overseeing regulatory compliance issues; and
    • Manager and/or perform month-end closing duties/process.


People Leadership:

  • Provide collaborative, supportive leadership to the accounting team with a focus on promoting personal and professional growth and development;
  • In coordination with Human Resources, develop job descriptions for the accounting/finance department; and
  • Be present, engaged and a role model of professional conduct pursuing excellence in execution, seeking opportunities for continuous improvement, and producing creative and/or unique solutions.

First Year Deliverables / Measures of Success

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the organization and build collaborative relationships with all key internal and external stakeholders;
  • Create and ensure the timely delivery of accurate weekly, monthly and quarterly corporate financial reports;
  • Measure the profitability of cost centers and core corporate service areas; and
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement by analyzing current process and implement solutions as needed.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will have the following:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance or related field; and
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) is required.



  • 7 – 10 years’ accounting experience with a minimum 2 years’ experience in a Controller role;
  • Strong working knowledge of detailed financial data analysis;
  • Exemplary history of financial project management;
  • Working knowledge of federal, provincial, and local tax compliance regulations and reporting;
  • Successful track record in leading, motivating and managing teams;
  • Demonstrated experience developing and enhancing corporate finance and accounting policies;
  • Yardi experience considered an asset; and
  • Property Management or Real Estate Development experience considered an asset.
