Chief of Staff – The Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission


The Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission (APMC) was created in 1974 by the Petroleum Marketing Act. It is a provincial Crown corporation and an agent of the Government of Alberta. APMC is responsible for marketing Alberta’s conventional crude oil royalty, developing prices used in royalty calculations and other energy related activities.  In 2012, the APMC’s mandate was expanded to include assisting in the development of Value Added activity in Alberta’s petroleum sector, such as the development of the Sturgeon Refinery as well as new energy markets and transportation infrastructure.

Within the energy sector, APMC operates as the commercial arm of the Government of Alberta. The Commission is responsible for the following:

  1. Marketing the Crown’s conventional oil royalty received in kind and setting prices used in the valuation of the Crown royalty share of natural gas, natural gas liquids, and sulphur
  2. Adding value to Alberta’s energy resources
  3. Expanding access to global energy markets

APMC is accountable to and receives policy direction from the Minister of Energy.

Job Title:Chief of Staff
Reports to:Chief Executive Officer



Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”), the Chief of Staff (“CoS”) provides executive support to the CEO.  The CoS enables alignment of the organization’s priorities with the overall mandate and supports organization initiatives with government departments, external agencies, and reporting entities. This individual will play an active role in networking and facilitating key internal and external stakeholder relationships.  The CoS will be responsible for ensuring the on-time delivery of client-ready documents and presentations and will ensure the CEO is fully apprised of issues, initiatives, and stakeholder concerns. The CoS also serves as a liaison to the Board of Directors and executive management team and additional stakeholders. This individual has a track record of strong organizational, project management and administrative skills.

Key Accountabilities

CEO and Board of Director’s Support

  • Compile comprehensive briefing materials for meetings with the Board, stakeholders and the public in addition to compiling background research materials for the CEO in preparation for meetings and events
  • Arrange and handle all logistics for Board meetings and events: schedule meetings; draft agendas; develop, compile, and distribute presentation materials
  • Serve as the CEO’s administrative liaison to APMC’s Board of Directors including communicating directly on behalf of the CEO with Board members
  • Adhere to compliance with applicable rules and regulations set in bylaws regarding Board matters
  • Work collaboratively with the offices of the Minister, Assistant Deputy Ministers, Executive Directors and Directors to manage issues and projects achieving the businesses goals and objectives
  • Work closely with the CEO to keep them well informed of upcoming commitments and responsibilities, following up appropriately
  • Act as a “barometer,” having a sense for the issues taking place in the environment and keeping the CEO updated
  • Anticipate CEO’s needs in advance of meetings, conferences, etc

Office & Administrative Oversight

  • Manage the handling of highly confidential and sensitive information that pertains to the business and general administration
  • Provide senior administrative support for the CEO’s office including: planning, monitoring and reporting process and activities, coordinating meetings, meeting preparation and briefings, meeting minutes, tracking documents and deadlines, and providing follow up as needed
  • Receive and direct incoming calls; take actions on written materials, follow-up on action items; prioritize, respond and/or redirect all incoming emails and materials
  • Delegate and support appropriate responsibilities and timelines to team members, ensuring on-time delivery of all key deliverables
  • Manage all aspects of organization’s office services
  • Evaluate and assist in developing office policies and procedures for improved work flow and anticipate future needs as organization grows
  • Assist in the selection of vendors and purchase equipment, services, and supplies necessary for operation of organization
  • Support the CEO by taking on specific assignments, designing and producing complex documents, reports, and presentations and attending meetings and responding directly to inquiries on behalf of the CEO




The successful candidate will have the following:


  • A Bachelor of Business Administration or equivalent


  • A minimum of 8+ years of experience supporting senior executive leadership and board of directors
  • Experience working closely with or in public sector/government is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of the Government of Alberta policy development, decision-making process, and legislative procedures
  • Experience working with Executive Officer, Senior Management, and other leadership members in a corporate environment
  • Advanced technical proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint, Outlook)
