Chief of Staff – Georgian Bay General Hospital


Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) is seeking a Chief of Staff (COS) to join their team to play a key medical staff leadership role in a progressive and growing community hospital. Located in Ontario’s historic Huronia Region on the shores of beautiful Georgian Bay, GBGH is just 90 minutes north of Toronto and even closer to cottage country, offering the candidate the ability to commute from a desired location.

As a member the Hospital Board and Senior Leadership Team the COS will work closely with the President & CEO, and the Vice President, Patient Care Services & CNO to ensure the highest quality of medical care for the residents of Midland, Penetanguishene and surrounding area. It is expected that the COS will be on site a minimum of 1.5 days per week and be available to respond to urgent needs at all other times.

  • A modern 116-bed hospital with two sites located in the municipalities of Midland and Penetanguishene
  • A well-structured medical staff organization and collegial medical staff of 110 physicians
  • Teaching affiliation with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine
  • Services that include:
    • 24-hour Emergency Department – experiencing 47,000 visits annually – that just underwent a $7M expansion
    • Inpatient Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics services
    • Planned expansion of 20 inpatient mental health beds
    • Ambulatory and Palliative care services
    • Regional Complex Continuing Care – 32 beds
    • Regional Rehabilitation Program – 15 beds
    • 8-station Dialysis unit
    • Diagnostic Imaging suite including radiology, ultrasound, and CT modalities
    • Pharmacy and Laboratory services
  • Serving a population base of 55,000, swelling to more than 150,000 for six months of the year when seasonal residents return
  • Commencing the implementation of a new EMR system in October 2019 in collaboration with 3 other neighbouring acute care hospitals

As a Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee and member of the Hospital’s Senior Management team, the COS will promote best practice structures and processes amongst medical staff leadership, and complement these practices with a team-based leadership style that is consensus-oriented, results focused, transparent, and empathetic.

The ideal candidate will possess a progressive track record in medical leadership positions with a demonstrated appreciation for physician and multidisciplinary team challenges within the context of a medium-sized community-based hospital and changing health system.

As this is a part-time position the successful candidate will be able to maintain their current practice concurrently with their COS responsibilities or be considered for a GBGH medical staff vacancy where one exists.

In addition, the successful candidate must be eligible to be licensed to practice medicine in Ontario and hold a Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent) or hold membership in the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
