THE ORGANIZATION

Our client is a junior to mid-size oil & gas producing corporation with assets based in Alberta and British Columbia.  They are a wholly owned subsidiary of an international publicly traded company.

 

THE OPPORTUNITY

Job Title: Chief Financial Officer

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

Direct Reports:1 Direct (Financial Controller). 9 Indirect

Location: Calgary, AB

 

THE MANDATE

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”), the Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”) is responsible for planning, directing, and managing all financial and accounting aspects of the company. This includes providing excellent financial leadership, support, and information for timely and accurate decision-making by all stakeholders in a way that allows management and the Board of Directors to make decisions to maximize return on investment for the company; allow investors to make informed decisions; and enable management to foresee significant financial challenges or opportunities.

The CFO works closely with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO), to define the strategic financial objectives and business strategies for the company; plan, manage, and carry out a course of action to achieve these objectives and ensure that the company has the financial ability to execute its business plan.

The CFO will be an integral part of the leadership team; and will be a strong voice in helping make key decisions for the overall operations of the company. The CFO will manage and provide stewardship for overall Corporation’s asset integrity, regulatory compliance, and good petroleum industry practice for upstream assets.

Key Accountabilities

Strategic Leadership

  • As the senior financial leader manage the companies accounting and treasury functions, ensure compliance with, and interpretation of financial control and reporting requirements
  • Assist in formulating the company’s direction and strategies through a robust business planning process and advise the CEO on the financial implementation of strategic issues
  • Accountable for Corporation financial and statutory reporting, including external quarterly and annual reports and any issuance of financial information.
  • Develop financial and tax strategies. Present financial results and complex issues to senior management and the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Monitor all open legal issues involving the company, and legal issues affecting the industry
  • Ensure that the company complies with all legal and regulatory requirements
  • Understand and mitigate key elements of the company’s risk profile
  • Report risk issues to the audit committee of the board of directors

Fiscal Accountability

  • Review, develop and implement policies, processes and control for the effective operation of the financial functions. Review, revised and implement best practices for all accounting and financial control
  • Monitor business results on a monthly basis and provide presentation of the financial results to the CEO and the Board
  • Manage the capital request and budgeting processes
  • Develop performance measures and monitoring systems that support the company’s strategic direction
  • Provide financial support to the Business Units
  • Develop and implement audit plans and recommendations. Liaise with internal or external auditors. Provide feedback to the CEO and Board as appropriate.
  • Manage the accounting, human resources, investor relations, legal, tax, and treasury functions
  • Oversee employee benefit plans, with particular emphasis on maximizing a cost-effective benefits package
  • Supervise acquisition due diligence and negotiations
  • Monitor and manage cash balances and cash forecasts
  • Maintain banking relationships

 

FIRST YEAR DELIVERABLES / MEASURES OF SUCCESS

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Develop a strong, trusting relationship with the CEO, COO, parent company and Board ensuring one of communication and transparency
  • Develop, in conjunction with the CEO, a growth strategy to optimize and expand on producing assets
  • Review, and where appropriate revise, the existing long term strategic plan and short term annual planning documents in order to establish meaningful goals and performance indicators that will accurately measure success, by the team in achieving the plan
  • Develop a high-performing accounting and finance team
  • Utilize business analytics and established KPIs to make timely business decisions

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education

  • Canadian CPA (CA, CMA, CGA) designation is required

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years’ progressive senior financial management experience in an oil and gas operating environment
  • Experience working for a publicly traded organization would be an asset
  • Experience in stock IPO and listing would be an asset
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions would be an asset
  • Strong understanding of corporate finance and performance management principles
  • Ability to make recommendations and provide analytical insight and interpretation of complex financial data to senior management in a clear and concise manner

  • Goal-oriented and a demonstrated ability to gather and analyze data, ability to develop a plan/ strategy to move the organization forward
  • Strong financial skills, organized, detail-oriented, and disciplined approach to delivering targets on time
  • High standards of ethics and a focus on safety and the environment
