Chief Executive Officer | Group Medical Services

The Organization

GMS (Group Medical Services) provides a complete range of health and travel insurance benefits and wellness services to individuals and groups. GMS offers a range of health insurance products for individuals and small groups; emergency medical coverage for immigrants and visitors to Canada; and travel insurance providing emergency medical, trip and baggage coverage for Canadians travelling outside of their home province/territory or out-of-country.

In 2003, Group Medical Services formed a wholly owned subsidiary, GMS Insurance Inc., to further diversify and expand its geographic boundaries. Operating as Group Medical Services, GMSI is licensed in all provinces and territories outside of Saskatchewan.

The Mandate: President & CEO

The President & CEO will provide the executive leadership to ensure that the company successfully delivers on its mission and vision to support the health and wellness of Saskatchewan residents and will advance the company’s national growth strategy. They will drive the realization of the company strategy and will ensure execution of operational and strategic initiatives.

 

Key Accountabilities

  • Assess overall performance against strategic objectives
  • Lead the strategic planning and execution plans, for Board approval,
  • Advance performance by driving improvements in revenue, profit, customer retention, loss prevention, and expense ratios
  • Assess team’s performance against annual operating plans to ensure business targets will be met or exceeded.
  • Allocation of human and financial resources to ensure that teams have access to necessary tools, coaching and development opportunities
  • Identify and invest in strategic market opportunities, products, and product enhancements to grow market presence, customer retention and employee engagement
  • Effectively build and manage external relationships, while proactively gathering market intelligence, to make appropriate recommendations and changes in operations, processes, and policies
  • Actively participate in local, provincial, and national industry events and encourage the SLT to do the same.

 

Education

  • Academic credentials at the undergraduate level or higher.

 

Experience, Competencies and Attributes

  • A minimum of 15-20 years of progressive senior management multi-functional experience, ideally combining finance, sales, marketing, operations and/or information technology leadership roles within the insurance industry.
  • The ability to communicate with and understand the complex business management and needs of a purpose-driven organization
  • Strategic ability to adopt the long-term view to ensure each line of business is aligned organization’s strategy and goals
  • Has had the responsibility for leading others through change
  • A motivational leader who will build a high-performance work environment
  • An engaging, approachable, open, and transparent leadership style.
  • Has overseen the implementation and updating of processes and systems to enhance opportunities for efficiencies and growth
  • Has a track record of building long standing internal and external relationships
  • Hired, coached, motivated, developed and evaluated the performance of direct reports
  • Understands and embraces the notion of delivering a social dividend
