THE ORGANIZATION

Our client is a junior to mid-size oil & gas producing corporation with assets based in Alberta and British Columbia.  They are a wholly owned subsidiary of an international publicly traded company.

 

THE OPPORTUNITY

Job Title: Chief Executive Officer

Reports to: Board of Directors

Direct Reports: (2), Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer

Location: Calgary, AB

 

THE MANDATE

Reporting to the Board of Directors (“Board”) the Chief Executive Officer(“CEO”) is responsible for leading and managing the organization to meet the goals and objectives of both the Corporation and the Board’s mandates.  The CEO will manage and provide stewardship for overall Corporation’s asset integrity, regulatory compliance, and good petroleum industry practice for upstream and midstream assets.

Key Accountabilities

Strategic/Executive Leadership

  • In consultation with the Board, the CEO will identify and develop short and long range strategic goals and objectives for the organization that encompasses both organic growth and growth through acquisition
  • Lead initiatives to identify and explore acquisition and merger opportunities
  • Identify risks and opportunities to the organization and develop corresponding business strategies to manage the risks and opportunities
  • Responsible for identifying, developing and presenting business plans, including the corresponding Operating, Capital and Financial Plans in line with the Board of Directors requirements for Board approval
  • Monitor business plan progress, assess the need to revise directions and actions to reflect changing circumstances and keep the Board informed of any changes and its progress
  • Provide quarterly and annual update reports to the Board

Operational & Financial Leadership

  • Oversee the annual budgeting process and work with other executives and operational management to facilitate understanding and accountability
  • Conduct timely reviews of financial results while ensuring optimization of assets are consistent with business plans
  • Ensure the financial performance of the Corporation is accurately and properly reported to its shareholders and to ensure all necessary compliance reporting are made in a timely manner and maintains a reasonable system of financial control
  • Ensure the Corporation’s Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) policies are of the highest ethical standards by periodic review and update and to ensure the Corporation’s employees observe and comply to the HSE policies
  • Work with the operational leadership team to develop ways to maximize the asset value of the organization’s properties

People Leadership 

  • Empower the leadership team to bring forward recommendations for business or operational improvement by cultivating a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship
  • Ensure a mentoring process is in place to grow high-potential staff as part of the overall succession plan
  • Ensuring the leadership team is informed and aligned in achieving the organizational, operational and financial performance goals
  • Creating a culture of accountability through effective communication and alignment of strategic direction
  • Ensure development and observance to a set of ethical standards by officers and employees of the organization

Public and Government Relations and Compliance

  • The CEO will be responsible to interface, develop and maintain good relations with the relevant government authorities, business partners and investors
  • The CEO, leading from a foundation of ethics and compliance, will provide stewardship for overall asset integrity, regulatory compliance, and good petroleum industry practice for upstream and midstream assets

 

FIRST YEAR DELIVERABLES / MEASURES OF SUCCESS

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Develop a strong, trusting relationship with the Board ensuring one of communication and transparency
  • Develop, in conjunction with the Board, a growth strategy to optimize and expand on producing assets
  • Review, and where appropriate revise, the existing long term strategic plan and short term annual planning documents in order to establish meaningful goals and performance indicators that will accurately measure success, by the team in achieving the plan
  • Develop a high-performing and accountable leadership team
  • Display fiscal leadership in meeting cost-control goals as established in long-term and short-term planning documents
  • Utilize business analytics and established KPIs to make timely business decisions

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline
  • MBA would be ideal

Experience

  • 10 years of experience in a senior executive management position in an oil and gas operating environment
  • Familiarity with diverse business functions such as marketing, operations, finance etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of corporate governance and general management best practices
  • Experience in merger and acquisitions
  • Strong understanding of corporate finance and performance management principles Experience working for a publicly traded organization would be an asset
  • Exposure to land development is an advantage

  • Entrepreneurial, growth minded and self-motivated with a high level of enthusiasm and energy, coupled with a strong work ethic and genuine pride in work
  • Ability to manage a strong team while taking direction from the parent corporation
  • Acumen in technical and business aspects of the industry combined with a willingness to debate, challenge and listen to others; be open to different views and perspectives to arrive at the best decision and solutions
  • Goal-oriented and a demonstrated ability to gather and analyze data, ability to develop a plan/ strategy to move the organization forward
  • Strong financial skills, organized, detail-oriented, and disciplined approach to delivering targets on time
  • High standards of ethics and a focus on safety and the environment
