The Organization

Operating under the Health Professions Act (HPA), the College of Chiropractors (the College) is a regulatory body which has had oversight of the chiropractic practice in Alberta since 1923. Acting with the protection of the public in mind, the College is committed to ensuring accountability, safety, health, and well-being within chiropractic medicine.

In accordance with the HPA, the College of Chiropractors of Alberta is responsible for the following:

  • Registering Alberta Doctors of Chiropractic;
  • Establishing a Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice, Bylaws and other practice guidelines;
  • Establishing, monitoring, and evaluating professional, clinical and ethical standards;
  • Establishing a continuing professional competency program for all members; and
  • Investigating complaints and initiating disciplinary proceedings when necessary.

The Opportunity

Mandate

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the strategic leader who ensures an entrepreneurial approach, operational excellence, and commitment to the mission are all instilled within the College. The CEO will be tasked with the oversight of a regulatory body and the execution of the 2022-2027 strategic plan.

Working alongside a skilled Senior Leadership Team, the CEO champions individual accountability, empowerment, and organizational development. The CEO has a talent for drawing out the potential of others, recognizing that the most important resource of any organization is its people.

Passionate, strategic, and results-driven, the CEO possesses an affinity for engaging multiple stakeholder groups. They are comfortable acting as the face of the organization and will use their superior relationship-building and communication skills to engage with external partners and government.

 

Key Accountabilities

The position will include the following responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

  • Be the face of the College of Chiropractors of Alberta and elevate the organization to exemplify excellence in chiropractic standards, care, and regulation;
  • Effectively communicate and share the vision of the College throughout the community to increase awareness;
  • Ensure financial accountability and effective stewardship of the organization;
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to direct reports through establishing, implementing and monitoring goals and metrics;
  • Build and motivate a team of leaders who are committed to the vision of the College, and who feel empowered to think independently yet work collaboratively in support of the mission;
  • Establish succession planning and the continuous growth of internal capacity and leadership development as a strategic priority;
  • Continue the emphasis on alignment of vision in order to achieve organizational success;
  • Ensure that the appropriate structures and teams are in place, so internal operations run smoothly and efficiently and that organizational dollars are utilized effectively;
  • Developing and fostering superb working relationships with internal staff, cultivating an environment of encouragement and positivity; and
  • Champion a culture of internal excellence that emphasizes not only the “what” but the “how” of achieving results.

Governance Interface:

  • Engage with the Board in annual and long-term strategic planning with responsibility for the execution of the strategic and operational plan;
  • Ensure the Board of Directors are provided the information and support required to be effective in their role;
  • Proactive, timely, open and transparent communication to the Board of Directors, external stakeholders, and government officials;
  • Maintain an ongoing dialogue with the Board on successes and failures measured against key strategic priorities, recalibrating as needed to achieve stated goals; and
  • Liaise and participate in collaborative matters with other regulatory bodies, the profession of Chiropractic care, and other national alliances.

Operational Leadership:

  • Oversee the fiscal activities of the College including budgeting, financial reporting, and audits;
  • Ensure the College operates in a cost-effective manner and promotes cost efficiency while still maintaining the highest standards of quality in patient service delivery;
  • Provide general oversight of all operational activities, including day to day operations, resulting in effective and efficient functioning of the College;
  • Assure program quality and organizational stability through the development and implementation of standards, controls, systems, procedures, and regular operational evaluations; and
  • Ensure the participation of the leadership team in operating and capital budget preparations, management of goals and objectives, and the needs assessment of the individuals in care.

 

First Year Deliverables / Measures of Success

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Integrate well into the organization by being a CEO that is a visible leader at all levels of the organization who fosters strong relationships both internally and externally, while encouraging open communication, feedback, and recognition;
  • Establish a clear future direction for the organization and execute on the deliverables outlined in the 2022-2027 Strategic Plan; and
  • Continue to elevate the impactful work of the College of Chiropractors of Alberta to its provincial regulators by building strong relationships with key stakeholders, upholding quality standards, and advocating for the best practices of Members.

 

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education:

  • Degree and/or graduate degree, supplemented with several years of experience in senior executive leadership roles.

Experience:

  • Ability to lead a team focused on providing a supportive, innovative work environment;
  • Experience leading in a regulatory and/or public sector environment;
  • Proven ability to drive improvements, organize, and act as a senior leader coupled with an established reputation for delivering results;
  • Understanding of governance, Board/Council/CEO relations, regulatory frameworks, and working with a member driven and/or multi stakeholder organization;
  • A focus on adding and creating value; a leader with proven ability to work with, and influence groups and associations toward achievement of a common goal.
