Board Director – Fort McMurray Airport Authority

FORT MCMURRAY AIRPORT AUTHORITY  

The Fort McMurray Airport Authority was incorporated under the provincial Regional Airports Authorities Act in 2009. The first board was formed in 2010 and acquired Fort McMurray Airport from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Under Alberta legislation, the Airport Authority is legally and financially independent, and operates as a non-share capital organization.

Fort McMurray International Airport (YMM) has a goal to be Canada’s premier regional airport. To reach this goal, YMM has made significant changes to services including:

  • Building a larger, more efficient airport terminal building;
  • Forming and delivering a higher quality of customer service through Team YMM;
  • Growing the capacity to handle more passenger service and air cargo every year; and
  • Providing general and corporate aviation services that match the economic activity of the region.

BOARD DIRECTOR

The FMAA is entering its next stage of evolution which requires additional board governance/industry experience that this Director will provide.  The Board currently consists of ten directors with a board chair. Directors are appointed through:

  • Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo;
  • Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce;
  • Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers;
  • Canadian Union of Public Employees (Local 1505); and
  • Fort McMurray Airport Authority.

Daily operations are handled by a management team led by a President and CEO.

The Board convenes five times per year for scheduled board meetings. In addition, each Board member will serve on one of the three standing committees and participate in other special meetings as required.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

The position will include the following responsibilities:

  • Competently assist the FMAA to achieve their mission;
  • Conduct one’s self in an appropriate, respectful and ethical manner; show good faith and avoid behavior that is embarrassing to the FMAA as determined by the FMAA Board of Directors;
  • Attend meetings with the Appointers, the Board, the Committee(s) & the Public;
  • Prepare, organize, execute and monitor assigned meetings and tasks;
  • Read, research, analyze, compose, edit, finalize and submit to the Board any documents relevant to assigned task;
  • Periodically upgrade knowledge about airport standards;
  • Travel, if required, for assignment(s) or meeting(s);
  • Prepare and conduct presentations as required;
  • Exercise good judgment and recognize sensitive issues;
  • Liaise and consult appropriately with board members, staff and stakeholders;
  • Refer queries, or issues and problems to the Board Chair as spokesperson of the Board;
  • May report to own Director’s Appointer on non-confidential matters; confidential matters are to be referred to the Board Chair;
  • Refer administrative matters to the CEO and or the Board Chair;
  • Support the decisions of the Board and refrain from making any statements that are contrary to Board decision or give the impression that a decision has been made when one has not;
  • Share the materials and ideas gained with fellow Directors following a professional development activity;
  • Comply with the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest rules and, in particular, avoid obtaining any direct or indirect benefit for themselves, a spouse or partner that is in any way related to the FMAA or its stakeholders including participating in any promotions or raffles, unless approved by the FMAA Board of Directors;
  • Annually sign a Director’s Confirmation, Acknowledgement and Declaration Form and complete a Personal Information and Skills Identification Work Sheet;

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Given the extent to which this Director position can positively influence the future direction and success of the organization, the FMAA is seeking a Director who possesses a combination of the following knowledge, skills and experience:

Board experience or education:

  • Experience as a board or committee member of an entity of similar size and characteristics is welcome; and
  • An ICD.D designation, or similar is welcome.

Leadership experience:

  • Demonstrated business acumen within the retail or land development sector considered an asset;
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to plan, manage, and execute on multiple projects simultaneously; and
  • Proven innovator who has experience challenging the status quo to create differentiation.

Risk Management experience:

  • Strong understanding and ability to identify key risks in a wide range of areas, including: reputational, HR, legal and regulatory, operational, business and strategic risks.

Governance:

  • Strong desire to contribute to governance processes, policies and accountabilities by which organizations are directed and controlled, including, understanding the role and relationships between stakeholders, directors and management.

Competencies:

  • A reputation as an effective change agent;
  • Familiarity with the business landscape within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo;
  • Exceptional communication skills (written, oral, public speaking) that can carry across diverse audiences and multiple stakeholder groups;
  • Emotional intelligence; empathy and understanding of different priorities and viewpoints;
  • High energy and self-motivated with a results-oriented focus; and
  • Flexibility and independence.
