Location:Edmonton, AB (Head Office); position is open to other Canadian locations

 

THE MANDATE

The Assistant Vice President, Total Rewards reporting to the Senior Assistant Vice President, Total Rewards and HR Operations will be accountable to provide total rewards expertise for large business transformation initiatives, including compensation consultation support.

Among these responsibilities will be advising and coaching senior leaders and managers on compensation plans and incentive plan design, manage market data analysis, manage premium requests, support organization structure analysis, lead Total Reward projects and initiatives, and support other Human Resources projects contributing to the overall total rewards strategy.

 

Key Accountabilities

Leadership:

  • Direct leadership of up to three Senior Managers, Total Rewards professionals, indirect leadership of one Compensation Specialist, and management and oversight of various external compensation consultants or contract resources as applicable;

  • Prepare and regularly review annual goals and career development plan with the Senior AVP, Total Rewards & HR Operations, and other HR senior leaders;
  • Actively work to support the achievement of the strategic goals of the CWB Group through strong people management processes; and
  • Oversee and manage Total Rewards budget and provide input into annual fiscal budget projections/requirements.

 

Compensation Programs:

  • Ensure compensation programs, HR processes, and metrics are aligned with the strategic goals of the organization, providing a structure that supports the current business needs, analyzing affordability of existing/proposed programs, and anticipates and addresses the challenges and opportunities of the future;
  • Proactively develops strong relationships with key business partners and drives a culture of responsiveness and service related to total reward programs and practices;
  • Present concepts and strategies to Senior Leaders, Executive team, and Board of Directors, as applicable;
  • Provide expert advice on all aspects of compensation programs, policies, and initiatives, including sales incentive programs, short-term incentives, long-term incentives, and accountable for the development and implementation of innovative and effective compensation and total reward programs, policies, and practices that drive the attraction and retention of key talent and support CWB’s strategic direction and organizational values;
  • Lead the Total Rewards team to ensure expert advice on sales incentive program design, executive compensation, and organizational design is provided to senior business leaders and Executives;
  • Ensure CWB’s compensation and HR processes meet all pay equity and pay transparency-related legislation and compliance requirements, including OSFI, federal and provincial standards as appropriate;
  • Manage the monitoring and reporting of the effectiveness of compensation and total reward programs to measure the impact on individual and organizational performance and engagement. Oversee market research analysis and review industry best practices to design a competitive total rewards system that enables the business to attract, reward, and retain top talent and that meets governance best practices;
  • Ensure timely completion of all annual salary surveys, benchmark CWB compensation programs, update salary grids/ranges on a bi-annual basis, and manage the annual base salary review and STIP payout review process;
  • Manage and ensure governance of incentive programs for CWB Financial Group participants;
  • Coach business leaders related to the effective management of employee compensation initiatives/strategies and support creative ways to attract and retain key talent;
  • Accountable for all total reward-related submissions to the Board of Directors including quarterly reporting requirements and annual proxy circular; and
  • Support acquisition, integration, and divestiture activity as required.

 

Job Evaluation:

  • Accountable to oversee the job evaluation processes for all CWB non-executive positions, including timely evaluations and robust governance practices;
  • Ensure the Total Rewards team collaborates with business leaders and other HR team members in the development of job descriptions and ensure new and existing roles are evaluated and compensated in a systematic and consistent manner; and
  • Provide advice and counsel to HR Business Partners and senior leaders, as applicable, related to organizational design considerations.

MEASURES OF SUCCESS

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Inspire trust, build cohesive and collaborative relationships with other business leaders in the organization and cohesion across teams;
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of CWB’s human resources system, policies, and procedures;
  • Lead the Total Rewards team in the design development and implementation of various sales incentive programs across the business;
  • Ensure CWB’s compensation and HR processes meet all pay equity and pay transparency-related legislation and compliance requirements, including OSFI, federal and provincial standards as appropriate;
  • Contribute to the redesign of CWB’s benefits program;
  • Manage the monitoring and reporting of the effectiveness of compensation and total reward programs to measure the impact on individual and organizational performance and engagement as the business grows;
  • Oversee compensation harmonization initiatives across multiple lines of businesses; and
  • Oversee market research analysis and review industry best practices to design a competitive total rewards system that enables the business to attract, reward, and retain top talent and that meets governance best practices.

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education

  • University Degree specializing in Human Resources or equivalent experience;
  • A CCP/GRP/ACCP/MCCP certification is an asset; and
  • CPHR designation is preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 10 – 15 years of total rewards experience, including direct leadership experience in a Total Rewards function;
  • Previous experience as an HR practitioner (generalist or specialist) is preferred;
  • Experience leading multiple projects, including planning, budgets, concept development and implementation;
  • Experience in people practice measurement;
  • Knowledge of industry total rewards best practices and trends;
  • Specific expertise in knowledge of sales incentive plan design, base salary and short-term variable compensation design, salary survey administration, executive compensation, long-term incentive program management and job evaluation expertise;
  • Working knowledge of total rewards legislation within both federal and provincial jurisdictions, human capital management systems, and organizational design principles;
  • Working knowledge of Workday HCM system would be preferred;
  • Pay equity and pay transparency knowledge and experience; and
  • Experience working in a corporate environment, and financial services experience would be an asset.
